Like you’re an addiction.

Fuck, I’m explaining this terribly.

Oh, nope. Merrick does this. Not me. We will keep him talking to you guys.

This is his reality show, after all. We are just living in it.

I’m happy he isn’t like Joanie, same with dad.

And in a couple of nights, her life will be in my hands.

Blood for Blood.

I’ve tried to imagine what it will be like. The entire experience. But I still can’t wrap my mind around it. It doesn’t seem real, yet.

The responsibility weighs heavier on me each day.

I need to do the legacy proud. Joanie tarnished it. I have to bring it back. Make it better.

So here I am, sitting outside in a graveyard that is located in my backyard. It’s enormous, extending for acres in either direction. Once Joanie is relieved of her duties, it will give me more of an opportunity to explore it. To visit the rows upon rows of headstones, I wonder if there are more statues or crypts for other founding families.

I haven’t found much on the other families. But the history, this life, it has grown on me. It’s becoming more important to me to learn about it.

This is enough thinking for one night.

Turning my brain off, I focus on my surroundings. Being present in this moment.

It could be one of my last like this while I learn my new role.

Focusing on the sounds. On the tiny lives around me.

Crickets are chirping. Moths fly around the brightly lit lamps. The air is crisp in my lungs.

Harper was right, it is kind of perfect out here.

Chapter22

FULL MOON - SEPTEMBER 29

This is surreal.

This night, the last full moon before October, will be part of our town's history. The other founding families will gather to discuss this night for years to come. And maybe, one day, my own will as well.

There is no running away.

Even if my dad was able to leave, I still believe in the curse. The town let him think he was safe until it decided it was time to come back.

He died.

I found Joanie’s number in his phone.

And now he has returned and so have I.

There was a moment, in the back of my head, where I had wanted to leave.

To get away from Port Canyon and never look back, but the pull to stay was stronger.
