I pop out of her room to the library where Darla and Mark have been spending their days lately.

“Guys. She's up and wants to see the both of you.” I snap my fingers and point at both of them.

They both look over at me with wide eyes. I don’t stay for the rest of their reaction and head back to Fallon’s room.

“They are on their way, milady.”

Chapter29

Darla

Us spirits rarely violate the privacy or the home of our keeper and protector, but unusual circumstances call for unusual measures.

Fallon is sitting on her bed with Merrick, while Mark and I stand at the edge of her bed.

She is the first to speak. “Is that how the ceremonies usually go?”

Her question is valid.

“No, my child. It was the first of its kind that I have seen.”

“Why? What happened?” She is confused. Just as I was. Until I wasn’t.

“The elder spirits recognized your pure intentions. They also knew you’d been thrown into this, and instead of running or trying to escape the town, you stayed. Where Joanie was evil, you were good. You wanted to learn and understand us, and our town’s traditions. I’m sure you were scared or nervous, but you never let it deter you. You never let Merrick deter you. All of this means a lot to us, and the founding elders decided to give you a gift.”

“A gift? What do you mean?” Fallon questions.

“My child. The founding elders cast a very special and very rare incantation upon you.”

“A fuck what now?” Merrick, ever so charming, speaks up.

“Incantation. Spell. Gift. If you were to cut yourself, you will see that you will bleed blue instead of red. Your skin is now cool to touch because they have slowed your heart rate down. Your energy and health will always remain at its peak. You will never be sick or diseased, and you will never age. In ten years, when you look in the mirror, you will still look as you are today.”

“What? Why? I don’t understand.”

“My child. They have chosen you to have this. They know you will succeed and do great things for this town and the spirits you keep. You will restore the Knight name as one of the founding families. They wanted to thank you, and this is their way of doing so. Eternal health and youth. For as long as you want it. When the time comes and you are ready to pass this duty on and leave the human world, you say the word and they will make it seamless and painless for you. Then you will join us in the spirit world. Your best friend is smart. This was always your fate and destiny, and you embraced it with open arms. Don’t think they don’t see how Harper has as well. She has something special waiting for her when her time comes, but her ceremony will involve a lot less death. We don’t like killing our elders. We have only done it once before, and only when it's necessary. This was. Joanie was toxic. The spirits couldn’t be in their form in the cemetery and always had to hide. An uneasy atmosphere, would be a polite way of describing it. But that is in the past. We thank you, Fallon.”

Mark speaks up, “Don’t be scared, my girl. You are so strong.”

Tears well in Fallon's eyes. Merrick grabs her hand and places it in his, comforting her while she takes this all in for the first time.

The founding elders speak through me, and I relay their message. “They said the lights and levitation were for effect. They thought it would be a fun show for the people, and they apologize if it scared you. Your five days of rest were needed as your body changed.”

She faintly laughs. “Fuck. I want to say thank you, but I also want to scream. I know I didn't ask for any of this, but I won’t run from it. I’m not a coward. I just need time. To adjust. This is… a lot.”

Nodding my head, “I understand, my child. We will give you all the time you need.”

Mark and I walk toward her bedroom door when she speaks up once more. “Darla, Dad. You guys can stay in the house or come and go as you please as much as you like. I like having you both around. It’s comforting. I’ve never had more than just my dad, and now I have you, my dad, and Merrick. I want… I need my family around me, please.”

Both Mark and I nod our heads.

She will do marvelously.
