Soon, all these played out, imaginary scenarios in my head will seem like an absurd take or a distant memory. I’ve scared myself over absolutely nothing, I’ll come to find. Soon, I’ll be enjoying Zyranth’s cooking while I talk with Ariella about the joys of married life.

I just wonder what wild animals he massacred today. The fun part is always seeing how he’s salvaged and prepared these creatures that he’s torn completely apart.

The equu snorts through all four of its nostrils, and I can hear it screaming in displeasure.

Something isn’t right.

I try helplessly to calm it down, patting it with my hand, before my legs are suddenly not riding the equu and the world is spinning around me. I crash to the ground with a thud, rolling out of the way to avoid being trampled by the equu’s diamond-like hooves.

On the ground beside me, covered in dirt, are all the baked goods I prepared for Ariella and Zyranth. I want to groan, but I can immediately tell that there are far bigger things at stake than baked goods.

And this time, I’m almost certain it isn’t my imagination playing tricks on me.

No longer worrying about Ariella or Zyranth, I shovel the goods back into the basket, managing to calm the equu down before mounting it once more. Nearby, I can hear something roaring.

I dare not look upon it.

I kick the equu hard, and it sprints off, dashing forward through the night.

Behind me, the roar deepens and intensifies, growing louder. I can feel this creature gaining on me.

I see Ariella and Zyranth’s cabin just ahead. I’m tempted to stop and solicit Zyranth’s help, but there’s no time.

I dash off into the night, unsure of where to go or what to do. I only know that if I don’t act fast, this creature will surely catch me.

As it gives one more urgent, ear-splitting roar, I turn my head around to look behind me.

THE END.

TANEM

The night is almost as dark as I am.

Almost.

Maybe nothing is darker than I am. I don’t know. I have lived a very long time.

Somewhere in my memory, maybe I can find something as dark as I am.

But I have no interest in searching through my memories for something that doesn’t matter.

What matters is that I am darker than night, and I shift and ripple with the shadows of Eelry.

I am not trying to hide. Not really. I am hunting, and maybe I should hide. Be stealthy.

Maybe.
