“I had someone come by before we got here and they stocked the fridge. Hopefully, I got your preferences right. Help yourself to anything.”

Reyna nodded as she looked around the large, open space.

“I figured I could fire up the grill and make dinner?”

“You cook?” Reyna looked bewildered, and I couldn’t help but laugh.

“I grill. Steak okay with you? Or we have some veggie burgers?”

“Yeah, steak’s fine. I’m starving, actually, so get going, mister.” She playfully slapped my ass.

“Okay, okay," I laughed. "I’ll go get everything started. There should be a cheese tray in the fridge if you want. Crackers are in the pantry.”

Reyna’s eyes went as wide as her smile as she turned toward the fridge. "Ooh, I want," was all I heard as her head became buried in the open fridge.

I slid open the glass door and went to start the grill before preparing the steaks and getting everything ready.

“I’ll make a salad,” Reyna said when I came back inside. Something about the domesticity of the whole situation tugged at my heart. Is this what it could be like with a partner? Weekends at the cabin just grilling and hanging out?

Is this what it could be like with Reyna?

The question kept circling around my brain as I made dinner and I was feeling uneasy when we sat down at the dining table on the screened-in porch.

“Thank you for bringing me here. This is really peaceful.” Reyna lifted her wineglass in a toast and I copied the movement, not really sure what was raging in my body.

It felt something a little too close to happiness.

Reyna kept the conversation flowing, and I felt the words and syllables in my throat, but I couldn’t really focus on anything except the buzz in my brain. The buzz told me that I should be careful before I fucked it all up like I inevitably would. Another buzz told me that I couldn't fuck it up. She was here on contract.

I was vaguely aware of clearing away dishes with Reyna, but every time I got hit with the smell of berries coming from her skin, my mind went hazy again.

Eventually, we ended up back on the porch, sitting close on the couch, Reyna’s thigh pressed against mine.

“Okay, let’s play twenty questions,” she said.

“Huh?”

“Well, we need to keep getting to know these details about each other if people are going to believe we’re madly in love.”

“Oh, right. I was hoping I could get to know you more.”

Reyna looked at me and lifted a brow before smiling.

“Okay. What do you want to know?”

“Everything. Do you have brothers or sisters?”

“I have three older brothers. They’re all a pain in my ass.”

“Oh, so you grew up with brothers. That makes sense.” I took a slow sip of wine.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Something sparked in her eyes like she was waiting for the insult. Yep, it made total sense.

“Well, it seems like you know how to hold your own in any argument. And you don’t back down from challenges. You tend to say what you think without any fear of consequences. You’re not afraid to bend the rules. And it seems like you might have a bit of a rebellious streak. Oh, and you're not afraid to tuck in to the food on the table. It’s all really sexy, honestly.”

She laughed at the last one. "You might just be right on that last one. I had to make sure to eat before the boys would score all the food. It was a feeding frenzy sometimes." She seemed to be savoring the memory at that moment.

“And what about your parents?”
