“Yes, our parties are normally quite star-studded.” She looked at me with amusement.

“This must be quite the life,” she commented, taking another sip of her wine.

“Well, this will be your life too now.” She smiled at me.

“Bryce, is that you?” a female voice said from behind me. Both Reyna and I turned toward the voice and I realized that it was one of my hook ups, Sylvie. This wasn’t a scenario I had planned for, but I decided to play it cool.

“Sylvie.” I racked my brain for something to say, but came up empty. I sounded true to my emotion, unenthusiastic. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

“Well, I wasn’t planning on coming but my dad couldn’t make it, so he sent me to represent him. I couldn’t turn him down. He said I could use one of his jets for the rest of the year, so it was an offer I couldn’t resist,” she responded with a chuckle. I noticed her shooting a look at Reyna as she spoke.

“Well, it’s nice seeing you,” I said, raising my glass toward her, hoping that it would be the end of our conversation.

“It’s great seeing you, too. I wondered why you stopped calling and then I learned that you’re engaged now?”

I turned to Reyna, who was looking a little uncomfortable.

“Yes, you heard correctly. I’m engaged now. This is my gorgeous fiancée, Reyna. Reyna, this is an old acquaintance, Sylvie.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” Reyna said with a small smile as she hooked her hand into mine as if marking her territory.

“Likewise. You’re lucky to have snagged him. He’s quite the charmer with many talents, but I’m sure you know that,” Sylvie said with a wicked smile and a wink, in an attempt to be spiteful.

“Oh, trust me, I know.” Reyna winked back. I could feel her sarcastic energy that went out with the wink. It was sexy how Reyna didn’t allow people to push her around. I could tell that Sylvie was not so happy with the sparring. She wasn’t a woman who was used to being challenged.

“Well, you enjoy the rest of the night, Sylvie. As you can imagine, Bryce and I have a lot of mingling to do.” Reyna started walking away. I knew then that there were no two ways about it. I had to follow Reyna, or I’d give her the impression that I wanted to talk to Sylvie. Besides, I would have followed Reyna anywhere.

“One of your women, huh?” she asked with a chuckle.

“I wouldn’t call her that, but yes, we used to mess around sometimes.” There was no point in lying. Reyna was smart.

“You still hook up with her?” I could sense that she was a bit jealous.

“Of course not, Reyna. You and I are engaged. There's a 'no messing around' clause in the contract, remember?” I needled her with my elbow.

Reyna looked at me for a long moment, searching my face, and then nodded once. I took her hand and pulled her closer. Reyna was a little surprised, but I looked deep into her eyes and then kissed her senseless. I felt her relax and give in to the kiss. Just for those few seconds, the music dimmed in my ears as my heartbeat grew louder. I knew our kiss was causing a scene, but I didn’t care. I wanted her to know that tonight, I had eyes for only one woman and that was her.

“Okay kids, that’s enough. I didn’t throw this party for you two to be the center of attention,” my mom whispered. I had no idea that she was next to us.

“Sorry, Mom,” I said, stepping away from Reyna. Reyna looked embarrassed as she stepped away, too. Her face was flushed and her eyes glassy with desire. I had one thing in mind and only one thing. I wanted to steal her away from the crowd and enjoy some private time where I could really make her flush.

Thankfully, my mom walked away and continued talking to her guests.

I took Reyna’s hand and led her toward the staircase.

“Where are you taking me?” she whispered.

“Away from everyone. We can always join the party later,” I responded as I continued to lead her to the staircase.

“Excuse me, Bryce. I have just a few questions for you,” another female voice said and I prayed that it wasn’t another former hook up. As I turned, I recognized the face and realized she was a reporter for the Atlanta Constitution.

“Yes?” I asked her, wondering what she wanted.

“I just have a few questions for you and the bride-to-be,” she said. I looked at Reyna.

“Sure,” Reyna responded with a warm smile.

“You guys seem really in love, but there are people who claim that this is all just a PR stunt to for your company,” she said with a tone of accusation.
