Reyna suddenly fell, and I quickly caught her before she had hit the pavement. Something was definitely wrong, and I needed to rush her to the hospital. Reyna was unconscious, and I quickly carried her into the car and rushed to the hospital as fast as I could.

Chapter 31

Reyna

Ifeltdrowsyanddrained. I heard a beeping sound as the blur in my eyes slowly cleared. I didn’t know where I was, but it seemed like a hospital.

The pressure of public scrutiny and separating what was real from what was fake with Bryce was clearly taking a toll on me. More than I thought.

“Reyna,” I heard Bryce’s voice as he rushed to my side. “God, don’t ever scare me like that ever again,” he said, taking my hand in his.

“What happened?” I asked in a weak voice.

“You had a panic attack and then you fainted. You were a bit pale, so the doctor asked to do some tests on you just to make sure you don’t have a bug or anything,” he explained as he stroked my hair. I tried to sit up, but I felt so weak my body could barely carry itself.

“It’s the drugs. Let me help you up,” said Bryce as he helped me sit up.

“How long have I been out?” I asked with concern.

“You woke up as soon as we got here, but then seemed to fall back asleep,” Bryce responded as he sat in the chair next to my bed. “I’ve called your family and my parents. They’re on their way here,” he said with a warm smile, stroking my hair. I smiled back at him weakly as memories began to flood back in my mind. Bryce and I were fighting shortly before I had fainted. He had said some things that hurt my feelings, and remembering the words made my heart shudder again.

“Reyna, I’m sorry about the things I said in the car. I didn’t mean to put it that way,” said Bryce as he rang for the doctor. It’s like he could tell what was going on in my mind. The doctor and a nurse came rushing in to attend to me.

“Ms. Miller. It’s good to have you back. How are you feeling?” asked the doctor as the nurse checked my vitals.

“I have a throbbing headache,” I responded.

“We’ll get you some pain meds for that,” he said as he looked at his clipboard. “We took a few tests and we might have found out what the culprit is,” said the doctor, turning to Bryce. “I understand that the two of you are engaged, soon to be married?” he asked, turning back to me.

“Yes, he’s my fiancé, so he can stay,” I responded with a smile.

“Well, it would be great if he stayed because we have some good news for you,” said the doctor, smiling at both of us. “It turns out you’re eight weeks pregnant,” he responded, and I gasped in surprise. For a moment I froze, not sure how to react. In that instant, I remembered that Bryce had stressed that he didn’t want to have kids and here I was, pregnant. What was going through his mind?

I turned to him but I couldn’t read him. He was just as in shock as I was.

“Wow, just how accurate is this test? There must be a mistake, I've been taking the pill,” I said, trying to understand how it was possible while I was on contraception.

“Well, contraception is not a hundred percent effective. There are factors that can hinder its effectiveness. For instance, some medications and antibiotics can make it less effective,” he responded, realizing from our reactions that this wasn’t exactly good news. “I'll give you some privacy while I get you medication for the headache. We’re just going to hold you here for the night because your blood pressure is still high and we will need to monitor that,” he added, and left the room together with the nurse.

The silence between Bryce and I was oppressive as we both tried to absorb the news. I was pregnant. I was going to have a baby. As I looked at the stunned expression on Bryce's face, I felt my throat close up. I needed him to say something, but he just stood there, motionless.

Finally, I couldn't take it anymore.

"I swear I didn't mean for this to happen," I said, my voice trembling. "I know how you feel about having kids and I would never force you into it. I didn't even want this to happen right now, just eventually."

Hot tears pooled in my eyes as I finished speaking. I waited, hoping against hope for a sign that it would all be okay. But Bryce still didn't say a word.

Finally, he stepped closer and pulled me into his arms, holding me tight as he kissed my forehead.

"It's going to be alright," he whispered in my ear. "Don't worry. I was there too, and I will accept responsibility for this."

The warmth of his embrace slowly soothed away my fear as I held onto him for dear life. Everything was going to be alright after all. I sobbed tears of relief but also tears of 'could this get any worse?'.

“Reyna, I’m sorry for what I said earlier. I know it was insensitive and wrong of me. As we talked about before, I don't know how to put business second. I am still really working on it,” he began softly. “And as for the baby, I’m scared, but you're not going to be alone,” he said with a faint smile. His words brought a wave of relief and joy over me. I felt like I could breathe again. I wasn’t sure if Bryce meant it or if he was just hiding his feeling because he was afraid to tell me the truth.

“Thank you, Bryce. I’m scared too. This is totally unexpected and too much to take in at the moment. But, we'll have to now. It's not like there's any choice,” I said to him with a smile. We hugged each other tightly, as we both left so many things left unspoken. It was like we were walking on eggshells.

Suddenly, the door burst open, and our families rushed in, overjoyed to see us. We shared the news with them, and they couldn’t contain their excitement.
