“It’s a long story, Ella. Why don’t you come into my office?”

I wanted to trust Ella, but I couldn’t help but wonder if I could. I barely knew her and while sheseemedkind and trustworthy, it was a hard lesson I’d learned long ago that people aren’t always what they seemed.

Ella closed the door behind her, and I told her the whole situation. How Bryce’s reputation was impacting the company’s bottom line, and they needed someone like me to help him appear more stable and committed. I was also going to be a buffer of sorts between him and any possible backlash from the public. I told her we weren’tactuallygetting married. This was just for appearance's sake.

As I talked, Ella sat stock still. I wondered if she was still breathing or maybe fell asleep with her eyes open. It was a little disconcerting. But when I wrapped it up, she started nodding and I let out a breath of relief. I did not want to have to deal with a dead assistant on top of everything else today.

“Please be careful, Reyna. I like Bryce, and he's hotter than hot, but you can never really trust people like him.”

I laughed lightly. Ella was clearly very perceptive. After I assured her not to worry about me, she gave me one more careful look and then went back to her desk.

I sighed and fell back against the couch, letting my head rest on the soft fabric.

In theory, nothing good ever came from sleeping with your boss or getting involved personally with your boss in any way. But maybe…I couldn't deny that all this talk and discussion had lit a fire between my legs.

Maybe something extraordinary could come out of all of this. Maybe I’d get what I wanted most in this life even faster than if I kept going at it on my own.

And, as a bonus, there's no way anyone would deny that Bryce was fucking hot. Like, run your nails down his back hot. Like feeling his moist skin against yours as we… I shook my head. But the reality was, who knew where things could lead? I liked to have a good time just as much as Bryce, so we might find ourselves in interesting situations.

I blew out a breath and silently hoped that this wasn’t a disaster just waiting to happen. The idea of being engaged to Bryce for the sake of his company seemed like a crazy plan that could go wrong at any moment. But there was something between us, something unspoken and electric that drew me toward him despite all the risks involved. I couldn't deny Ella's words were true. Getting involved with Bryce was a risky move, but the thought of what could happen between us sent shivers down my spine.

I closed my eyes to try to absorb the last hour or so of my life when my phone buzzed. The notification was from a new email. An email from Bryce. The contract was ready.

Damn, that was fast. It seemed like everyone worked at warp speed here, but I supposed he would have numerous lawyers on speed-dial, ready to work on anything he wanted, whenever he wanted.

My thumb hovered over the email, anxious about opening it, knowing that whatever was written on this document would make all of this very, veryreal.

With one last deep breath, I clicked it open, inevitably starting a new page in the next chapter of my life.

Chapter 4

Bryce

Theballwentembarrassinglywide to the left of the putting mat in my office.

I was trying to calm myself down as I wondered why the hell it was taking Reyna so long to accept my offer and sign the goddamned contract.

It had been three days since I sent the email.Three days. I had a feeling she was keeping me waiting on purpose.

I never chased after women, and I wasn’t about to start with Reyna. I couldn’t deny that she had me on my toes, wondering if she was going to reject the offer. Truth be told, I wasn’t entirely sure my ego could take that rejection. I was proud, but not too proud to admit – in the privacy of an empty office – that I hated rejection. Especially from a gorgeous woman.

Following up with Reyna had occurred to me. That was a normal thing to do. But something in the back of my mind told me that it might seem like I was begging her, given the situation and all.

So, I’d wait. Patiently. I’d let Reyna reach out to me first.

I missed another shot and barely stopped myself from launching the putter through the glass window onto the busy street below. I needed to get out of here.

A knock on the door brought more frustration. Or maybe it was relief that I had to stop thinking about Reyna for one fucking second.

“Come in,” I barked, shocking even myself with how angry the two words managed to sound.

And in walked Reyna, looking like a goddamned daydream in a coral dress that skated just above her knee and set off the golden tone of her skin. I followed those long legs, again jacked up in sky-high heels, up her body to the hint of cleavage above the scooped neckline of her dress. I loved the way Reyna dressed. She knew just how to highlight every beautiful curve of her body in a way that provided just a hint of what might lie beneath. It was beautiful and maddening at the same time. It was enough to get my imagination running wild, thinking about the gentle swell of her breasts.

Today, her hair was tied up into a knot. It showed off the long, graceful lines of her neck and the strong, straight set of her shoulders. Reyna was beyond sexy. She was fuckingmagnetic. No wonder I couldn’t get her out of my mind. Who the hell hired her? I've got to give that person a raise.

I could only hope that she had good news for me. I couldn’t imagine being fake engaged to anyone else now that she was in my life and in my head.

Reyna closed the door behind her and stood there, looking at me with a small smile on her lips. She was playing hard to get. That much was clear to me now. Little did she know, I loved a challenge. Hopefully, my zipper was up to the challenge of my hardening…
