“Who’s his future son-in-law?”

“He doesn’t have one,” I say. “He has one daughter and she’s single as far as I can tell. Which is why it’s pretty annoying that he’s holding out on something so lucrative for a son-in-law who doesn’t exist yet.”

“It’s not like you can force him to give you the building,” Daniella points out.

Christian and I exchange sinister smiles.

“We can damn well try.”

One thing about D’Angelos is that we never quit. If we want something, we go at it with everything we’ve got until we get it. We’re stubborn like that.

I have a vested interest in making sure this deal goes well. I was the one who suggested we purchase the building. Which means it’s on me to take care of things. My brother trusts my judgment and I’ve never once let him down.

No matter what I have to do, we’re getting that fucking building.

Daniella looks from me to her husband and sighs softly. “I guess we’re going to a party, then.”

Cara’s screamsgo quiet as I finish. Neither she nor I say a word as I fall down to the bed beside her, both of us breathing too heavily and still basking in the cathartic bliss.

Fuck, I love sex. The only thing that ever makes me feel deeply is sex. Granted, those feelings are temporary and it eventually subsides, but it’s nice to have it as a release when things get too dark.

I force myself not to flinch when Cara places a kiss on the side of my face. I keep my gaze trained on the ceiling as she gets to her feet, pulling the blanket over her body.

“I’m going to go take a shower,” she informs me.

She doesn’t wait for me to acknowledge her words before she heads into the bathroom. The sound of the shower running fills the hotel room.

I’m still in the same place when she steps back out. Without a word, she begins to put on her clothes.

“Carlo,” she calls a few seconds later.

I finally look at her, finding her dressed and looking completely put together. Dark hair pulled up into a ponytail, every sign that she was just fucked wiped away.

“Yeah?”

She looks nervous. “I need a favor.”

I stay quiet as I wait for her to tell me what the favor is.

“My mom’s having a dinner in a few days. A few of our friends and family will be there. And I was wondering if you’d like to come.”

She’s not looking at me as she finishes her sentence. I sit up, resting against the headboard, and wait until her green eyes find mine.

“You asking me out on a date?”

Cara’s beautiful and smart, and I like that she keeps me on my toes. She and I started this relationship—this arrangement a few years ago. We ran into each other and had sex, and the sex turned into a few weeks of casual dating. But I never let it go any further, and she ended it. Since then, it’s been once-in-a-while encounters and I never thought it was anything more.

I thought she knew there were lines that couldn’t be crossed.

“You’re giving me those icy killer eyes,” she mutters.

I manage a smile. “You know I can’t.”

She sighs. And to my surprise, she doesn’t even push. “I know. But it was worth a shot.”

“What’s going on?” I ask, a little concerned.
