Damn, I never thought I’d see this. He seems nervous. It’s adorable. Another adjective I doubt he’d like being used in relation to him.

I quickly shake my head. “There’s no need, Carlo. It’s a pretty big box,” I say, smiling.

“You sure?”

“Yeah. I’m sure she’ll love it.”

He looks like he’s about to bring up something else, so I quickly link my arm through his and lead him out of the office. I ignore how nice his arm feels, big and strong. His muscles are practically flexing with every move.

A soft, silent sigh escapes me. In hindsight, I probably should have chosen a fake boyfriend that was less sexy.

I clear my throat as we enter the ward. There are six hospital beds in here and three of them are currently occupied. The parents of the other two kids are with them, curtains drawn around them to provide privacy. We walk toward Sarah’s bed. Her parents aren’t here right now but her mom has been a part of our conversations, and they knew we were stopping by.

“Doctor Tori!” Sarah beams. She’s much better than she was a week ago. Her vitals are great and she’s not in any pain anymore.

“Hi, sweetie. How are you?”

“Fine,” she says quickly. She looks pointedly at Carlo. “Is he your boyfriend?”

I have to practically pull him forward. “Yeah. Sarah, meet Carlo. Carlo, Sarah,” I introduce.

Carlo dutifully offers his hand to the little girl for a shake. She blushes as she obliges.

“Hi, Sarah,” he greets.

“You’re really handsome.” She giggles.

Now it’s my turn to blush. It turns out adolescent girls don’t really have filters.

“Thanks,” Carlo says, amused. “You’re not so bad yourself.”

She blushes even harder, her face turning red. “Thank you. Oh, I’m not supposed to like you, though.”

“Oh, really?” Carlo smirks. “Why?”

“Because you made Doctor Tori sad.”

“I did?”

“Yeah. She said you had a fight and then you wouldn’t talk to her. I think she missed you.”

“She did, huh?” Carlo asks, sounding pleased.

His gaze on my face is practically searing but I don’t look at him. I instead glare at the little demon on the bed.

“I never said that,” I state.

Sarah shrugs. “Yes, but you came in here with a tub of ice cream and kept talking about how upset you were because you got into an argument, so I put two and two together.”

Carlo’s laughing now. I want to disappear.

Okay, so maybe I was a little upset. We had a small argument and then he kissed me and then he vanished. The next day, I was in the mood for ice cream. Sarah might be nine but she’s also good company. I’m really going to miss her when she’s discharged.

“Ok Ms. smarty pants, no more secrets for you,” I say, jokingly.

“Don’t listen to her,” Carlo says, still smiling. “Here. I have something for you.”

He hands her the box of chocolates and all my annoyance vanishes at the priceless look on her face. Big blue eyes tear up as she stares down at her gift.
