I leave, hurrying for the elevators. Unfortunately, Dr. Shatt has already started rounds when I arrive. I quickly head for my office to put on my coat before rushing to the ward. Thankfully, they’re just about to approach the first bed when I arrive. Dr. Shatt raises an eyebrow at my entrance, turning to the second-year resident who’s beside him.

“Would you look at that? Bianchi deigned to join us this morning,” he says, scowling.

“I am so sorry, sir. There was traffic on the way.”

He offers me an unimpressed look. “If you’re going to give me an excuse, Bianchi, make it a good one.”

“Right,” I mumble.

We head for the first bed, “Chart,” Shatt says, holding out his hand.

Kelvin, the second-year resident, immediately hands him a file, which he glances through for a minute or two.

“Hi, Calden. How are you feeling today?” he asks the little boy with light blue eyes.

His mother, who’s seated by his side, answers. “He said his throat was sore and he’s still barely speaking, Doctor.”

“Hmm,” Shatt says, flipping through the file. “You administered the antibiotics, right?”

He doesn’t look at either of us since he’s still flipping through the file. But I was put in charge of the kid, so I reply, “Yes sir.”

Calden has acute tonsillitis. He was in a lot of pain when he was brought in two days ago and has improved slightly, but he’s still pretty weak.

The kid opens his mouth. His voice is dry and raspy when he speaks. “I-it hu-hurt-s.”

“I know it does,” Shatt says kindly. “But you’re a big boy, right?”

Calden nods, his long brown hair falling over his eyes. His mom reaches over to brush it away.

“Good. Have you been eating well?”

His mother opens her mouth to speak but Dr. Shatt beats her to the punch.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Marn, but I’d prefer it if Calden replied to me. I want to see if he can speak a little better.”

She nods, looking at her son expectantly. The kid tells us, with great effort, that he had some soup last night but hasn’t had anything this morning. He also manages to inform us that he barely has any appetite.

“Alright, Calden. I’ll prescribe you some more drugs. You just need to eat some food and take them. I want you discharged by Friday. Okay?”

He nods and even offers us a smile. We walk away, heading to the next bed where a little girl’s asleep. Ashley hit her head really hard while she was playing at the park. She was brought in two days ago with a concussion. She’s stable right now but it was rough for her last night. Dr. Shatt asks her parents a few questions and then we moving on. Soon, the rounds end, and I get some moments of respite in my office before I have to head down to the emergency room.

“So…”Nora asks expectantly. “Talk to me. How was it?”

I bite into my sandwich, taking the time to chew before replying.

“It was pretty amazing,” I say, somewhat sad. “I’m ruined for all other men, Nora. I swear his dick is magical.”

She practically cackles when I let out a sigh. “That good, huh?”

I take a sip of my drink, nodding.

“I’m happy for you, girl. I can’t believe you went from wanting to end your fake relationship to starting a new one.”

That gives me pause. I shift uncomfortably in my seat. “Actually, Carlo and I didn’t have that talk,” I admit quietly.

“What talk?”
