“Be that as it may, I’d like to meet him next week.”

I swallow softly before nodding.

“Enjoy your new car,mia cara,” he says, kissing my cheek.

My mom can barely keep still as she stands in front of me. I’m mere inches taller than her.

“Is he Italian?” she questions.

My mouth feels dry as I reply. “You’ll find out at the party, Mother.”

We’ll both find out.

“Okay, then,” she says. “I can’t wait to meet him.”

“Me too,” I mutter quietly.

Then she’s following my father out and I collapse back onto the couch. My mind whirs as I wonder where I’m going to find a boyfriend for hire.

I am so screwed.

CARLO

All our plans have gone to shit, and it’s all thanks to my youngest brother and his wife.

I grit my teeth as I take in everybody seated at the back of the limo. This party was meant to be about business, not a family event, but thirty minutes ago, we dropped my nieces and nephew at their grandmother’s place. Topher and his wife, suddenly with a free schedule, opted to follow us, and so we all piled into the limo.

We were all invited to the party, but I’m uncomfortable with more than half of my family going to the same location. We didn’t make any plans for protection.

“Oh, chill out, Lo,” Toph murmurs, shooting me the mischievous grin that never strays too far from his face.

“Don’t talk to me,” I say, my jaw clenched.

“Are you upset that you’re now the fifth wheel? Is that it?”

I swear I love my little brother, but sometimes I wonder just how well he’d be able to make taunting remarks if I shoved my fist through his jaw.

He must see something threatening in my expression because his smile slips. Topher turns to our other brother, who’s quietly whispering something in his wife’s ear.

“Why’s he so mad?” he asks with a pout, pointing at me.

Christian looks up. He doesn’t seem nearly as upset with our new stragglers as I am.

“Because you’re party crashing?’ Christian says like a question.

“But it’s a Bianchi party,” Toph points out. “I’ve been to more of those than everyone in this car combined. Salvador loves me.”

That makes me perk up and I arch an eyebrow.

Daniella’s the one to voice what I’m thinking. “He does?”

Toph nods. “Yeah. Plus, Kat’s met him a couple of times as well. He’s close with Jameson’s father.”

In the Upper East Side, everyone’s connected to everyone, but Topher and his wife’s presence might not be as much of an annoyance as I thought. I turn to my sister-in-law and shoot her a smile.

“How well do you know the Bianchis?” I ask her.
