“Just tell me where she is, you asshole.”

“You gave me your word.” Sethos lifts his hand to inspect his sharp claws, ignoring my demand. “Your threats don’t worry me.”

I growl. “I said I’d guard it as long as I perched here each day, but I swear to heaven I’ll uproot that fucking pedestal and move it myself if you don’t tell me where to find her.”

Sethos glares at me. Finally he sighs. “Did you claim her or not?”

My fists ball at my side. “None of your fucking business.”

He rolls his eyes. “Clearly you didn’t, or you wouldn’t be this wound up. All I know is I hired her through Monstrous Deals. I can show you where to find the office. That’s about it. They don’t give out employee’s addresses for obvious reasons.”

“But she works for them? They’ll know where she’s working?”

“They might, if she’s on a job for them.” Sethos shrugs.

“Tell me where to find them.”

Fifteen minutes later, I’m striding through the door of the Monster Bar, looking around the room, breathing in deep and hoping my Jessie is here. No luck. A tall, lanky werewolf behind the bar gives me a curious look. So I stalk over. “I need to find Jessie.”

He gives me a sharp-toothed smile and a shrug. “Can’t help you, brother. I can serve you a drink and show you how to request a booking through the app—”

“Fuck your app. Fuck your booking. She’s not safe. I need to make sure she’s safe.”

The werewolf sets down the glass he’s been polishing. He tilts his head and his nostrils flare. “What makes you say that, brother?”

He’s listening, at least. His body language might look relaxed, but I can spot the predatory watchfulness in the set of his shoulders. I take a deep breath in and force myself to slow down. He might actually be able to help me, but I can’t judge whether or not he might prove to be an ally yet. “She told me she was taking a job she wasn’t sure about. She had a bad feeling about it.”

His bushy brows lower. “Then why didn’t you go with her?”

At my sides, my hands clench into fists. “It was daytime. There was nothing I could do. She left before I woke.”

“And the job...?”

“Was this weekend. That’s all I know.”

Fishing a phone from his back pocket, the werewolf makes a call. Someone on the other end answers, but there’s too much noise in the room for me to make out what is said.

“Got a client here who claims Jessie is in danger. Did she go out on a job for us tonight?”

After a pause, the guy’s frown deepens. “OK. Will do.”

He puts the phone back in his pocket and steps forward close to the bar. “She’s not on an MD job tonight. Can you tell us anything else?”

I let out a huff of frustration. “Never mind. I’ll deal with this myself.”

Before I can turn to go, he leaps across the bar in a motion quicker than I anticipate and lays his hand on my arm. It takes everything I have not to break his arm, but that would only slow me down when he or someone else retaliates. “Hey! We look after our workers at Monstrous Deals. But if you want to help her, you have to give me something to go on.”

I sigh. He’s right. I wrack my brain for a moment. “I think she actually said it was a human job. I can’t be sure. I guess I hoped I was wrong.”

Bartender guy rubs at the scruffy beard which covers his chin. “OK. Anything else? Was it in a club? A private job?”

I think for a minute. If it was in a club, she’d have security. “It must be a private job.” My tail swats the air. “This is taking too long. Her scent will be going cold.”

Werewolf only snorts. “Scent? What scent? You don’t even have a trail, or you’d be following it by now.”

This is infuriating! I grip the edge of the bar and the wood creaks as I squeeze.
