“Ma’am!”

Trying to sift through all the chaos, a soft gasp comes from the balcony. Several men point their guns in that direction. That action snaps me out of my stupor, causing me to take control of the situation.

“STOP!”

Several heads swivel to stare at me.

“Who is in charge here?” My eyes bounce between all of the officers. An older man with close-cropped graying hair and a slight belly steps in front of me before speaking.

“I am, ma’am, Sargent Barnes.” He looks me up and down, noticing my pajamas. “Can you please tell me who you are and who that woman on the balcony is?”

“I am Kennedy Bo… Ainsworth, this is my father’s house. The woman on the balcony is a friend of mine, Kassidy Heartwell.” A muttered “Worthington” can be heard in the background when I give my last name, but it gets ignored. The officer that was restraining me lets me go, while the ones who had their weapons trained on Kassidy holster them.

“Ms. Ainsworth…” he starts to say before an irate voice cuts him off.

“Her last name is Worthington.”

Gareth bites out loudly, making sure the entire room hears him. Ashton and Callum chuckle at his posturing. The Sargent shoots a look to the far side of the room. Clearing his throat, he looks back at me before speaking. It’s obvious he is trying to rein in his annoyance at being interrupted.

“Ma’am, do you know any of these men?”

His question hangs in the air, and the guys get nervous. Not sure why they thought it was a good idea to break in, but they could use a little shake-up. Responding in a resigned voice and nodding, I acknowledge knowing my intruders.

“Yes, sir. I am in a relationship with them.”

“Kennedy, we are fuckingmarried!” Gareth bellows.

The Sargent ignores Gareth as concern crosses his features. “Ma’am, are you safe? Do you want to press charges on these men?”

Keeping my features neutral, the question hangs in the air. After several long minutes and avoiding making eye contact, I finally let them off the hook.

“No sir, you can release them,” my tone is flat.

Not bothering to stick around, my feet take me back into my father’s office. Sitting in his chair again, my head leans on the headrest, and the tell-tale clicking of the handcuffs fills the air. Several minutes later, the flashing lights stop, and the police take their leave. Not moving from my spot, I decide to let the guys track me down since they have already come this far with tracking me. They can say what they want to say and can head back to the hotel.

Kassidy says goodnight, her voice laced with humor.

The house is silent. They guys don’t even make a sound. My curiosity is getting to me until I remember how pissed off I am at them. They don’t make me wait too long as Gareth steps into the room. He looks nervous. We stare at each other, waiting to see who will speak first. An exclamation from the foyer breaks our stare down, causing my lips to twitch.

“For fuck’s sake, talk to her already!”

Gareth rubs the back of his neck while looking at the floor. He takes a deep breath, letting it out slowly. He starts to speak; his voice is full of remorse.

“I am sorry, Kennedy.”

“For which part?” I state flatly, refusing to give an inch and make this easy on him.

“All of it.”

“All of what?” It is bad enough that Gareth is the one who is facing me while the other cowards stand outside the door, no doubt listening in.

“You aren’t going to give me any leeway, are you?” he asks dryly.

Crossing my arms over my chest and raising my voice loud enough that Ashton, Callum, and Rodney all hear me, dispersing the brunt of my anger.

“Youliedto me! Allfourof youliedto me!”

“We di…”
