Page 7 of Kill For Her

The girl in front of me flashes me a look as she turns around, and it reminds me of Felicity. Is it weird I want to know how she’s doing? This isn’t typical of me. Showing up at the hospital to check up on people from car crashes, but Felicity is different. I would like to think that if we met in any other situation, I would have asked her out in a heartbeat, but we didn’t. So, maybe I need to back off and give her some space.

I pull my phone out and type in Felicity Marrow. A social media page is the first thing to pop up from the search engine, and there is a recent post. Oh good. She is at home. The doctor wouldn’t have discharged her if she wasn't going to make a full recovery. A smile wipes across my face.

“Can I help you?”

Just like that I’m at the front of the line and the lady behind the counter is leaning over, hating her existence. “Theo Navaldi.”

She goes to the back, and comes back with three textbooks. This only reminds me how boring this semester is going to be. I have two classes that cover Non Profits specifically. I wish we could pick the classes we want to take, but nope. It’s just a list they want us to check off, that we will probably never ever use after taking the classes.

“Have a nice day.”

I throw my head back in an effort to say, yeah you too before pushing through the exit.

Here’s the thing. This is a small town. I will see Felicity again at some point. Maybe she has been thinking about me too and it’s mutual. Or I’m crazy and she won’t even say two words to me. Until I see her, I have other things to worry about right now.

The parking lot is a clusterfuck. My car is in reverse, but no one is letting me back out. Road rage activated. There is a black Ford Focus blocking me in, and I walk up to the door about to give them a piece of my mind and then I see her.

“What are you doing here?”

“I could ask you the same,” Jennifer responds, eyebrow heightened.

She sizes me up. Don’t get me wrong, she's attractive but I’m interested in Felicity.

“She make it home okay?” I already know but I shouldn’t.

“Yup. Picking up her books so she can get some rest.”

I place my hand on the top of the car. “If you let me out, you can have this spot.”

She nods and starts to back up. I put my car in reverse and back out, waving at her as I take off.

The house looks like a crapshoot from the outside but the parents seem to love Bella. Foster care can be hell for a lot of kids so I’m glad to see she finally found a couple that wants to foster to adopt. She’s a smart kid, well mannered, and just wants a family. Poor thing has been bouncing from home to home for the last few years.

Mentors for Fosters is a program I started in my city where adults can sign up to be there for the kids who need it. Sometimes they just need someone to look up to. A way for them to know the world isn’t always as fucked up as they see it inside their foster home.

I wish I could say that the system wasn’t broken, but it is. Between my time myself bouncing around, and seeing her different places, they need to be more strict with who they accept. A child shouldn’t be sent to live with someone just because they get a paycheck to do so. These kids need more than that.

“Theo, you made it!” Bella says, running out of the front door to my car.

“Of course! How was school today? Is that girl still giving you trouble?”

Her hands go to her lap and she avoids eye contact. “No, it’s better.”

She’s lying, but there is only such I can do without her giving me the other girls name.

“Well good, let’s go get ice cream and see what homework we have to work on today.”

I wave to Bella’s foster mom standing on the porch before taking off toward the local diner.

“You didn’t make it yesterday. Were you sick?”

“I had a bad crash at work and was stuck there trying to help the woman. You know my job, I don’t just punch a clock. I save lives.”

She smiles. “I know. That’s why I want to be just like you.”
