Taking my phone out of my back pocket, I quickly dial 9-1-1, give them the situation and the address. Then I call Roadkill. I know he may even get here before the ambulance, but they needed to be on their way no matter what, especially if she feels as if something is wrong.

“Rusk, you need to come to the salon,” I say, trying to keep my tone as even as possible. I don’t want to freak him out and have him drive erratically here. It would do no good at all if something happened to him on the way.

“I’m about an hour away from town. What the fuck is going on?” he shouts into the phone.

“It’s time,” I say, unsure of what else to say to this man.

I’m certainly not going to mention that this is an emergency of any kind, because I simply do not know what the hell is going on. She’s close enough to her due date that this might just be labor, but I’m not a doctor, and I’m not going to freak him out if I don’t have to.

“Meet us at the hospital,” I state.

“I’ll be there as soon as I possibly can, and Piper?” he calls.

“Yeah?”

“Take care of my girls?”

“Always,” I whisper before I end the call.

Moving toward her, I bend slightly to look into her eyes. “Do you want me to help you walk to the lobby so that you can sit down?”

She shakes her head, almost violently. “I can’t move. It’s all I can do to just stand here right now.”

“Then we’ll stand here,” I whisper.

“Can you text my doctor, Reese, and Henli?”

“I can,” I exhale and send out texts to anyone and everyone she asks me to, plus a few extra people as well, including Itch.

I’ve never been in a situation like this before. I’m no good in an emergency, but right now, I know that all she needs is support. Thankfully, I don’t have to stand next to her feeling absolutely useless for long. The paramedics show up, and when they start asking questions, their eyes darken when they get answers.

This isn’t good.

They don’t say anything, but I can tell by the expressions they wear this isn’t normal labor. Thankfully, they allow me to ride with her. I watch as they load her onto a gurney and put it up into the back of the ambulance.

The whole scene makes me want to burst into tears, but if I cry, she’ll probably cry, and she’s already no doubt scared out of her brain. She doesn’t need me being a crying mess, too.

Climbing into the back of the bus, I sit beside her, taking her hand in mine. She squeezes me, her eyes focused on mine the entire ride to the hospital. We don’t speak, but we don’t look away from one another either.

I don’t leave Kiplyn’s side when we arrive at the emergency room. Thankfully, her doctor beat us to the hospital and is already in scrubs and looks ready to go. I’m sort of pushed to the side and fine with that as a team of nurses and the doctor get to work checking everything.

It doesn’t take long. Whatever the issue is, it seems as if they find it within minutes, or maybe time is just moving differently as I watch everything play out in front of me. I can’t hear what they’re saying, their voices are hushed, but I am right here waiting for good news.

Then the doctor turns to me, motioning for me to come closer. I do, my legs shaking with each step I take. Without another word, he turns and walks out of the room and into the hallway. I follow behind him, my heart slamming against my chest with each step I take.

This cannot be good.

“Her placenta has separated from the uterus. There’s been an abruption, and I need to perform an emergency C-Section. I know her husband isn’t here, but I don’t think this is something she should do alone, and I can’t wait for him to arrive. This is lifesaving for both of them.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I whisper.

I’m taken to get prepped for the surgery, then I’m guided toward the operating room. Kiplyn is already there, hooked up to machines and things. I am told where to stand and take her hand in mine as soon as I arrive at her side.

“Rusk?” she whispers, looking up at me.

Smiling, I look down at her. “He’s on his way, but I’m going to stay right here with you until he gets here, okay?”

Her lips slowly curve up into a trembling smile as tears slide down the sides of her temples. Squeezing her hand, I give her a matching trembling smile. I’m scared to death for her, I don’t know how any of this happened, but I’m not going to go anywhere. I’m her sister, and I am standing right here beside her until Rusk arrives.
