I understood. I also understood she wasn’t going to tell me who this person was.

“So they saw something in a dream but they didn’t trust it to be real? Until it was too late,” I said slowly.

She nodded. “If it’s a gift, then it’s a treacherous one, Morgan. A gift that could drive you mad. Never knowing if what you see is real. Be careful. Don’t let the dreams sweep you away.”

This wasn’t helping. I was almost certain what I saw in my dreams was real. But I had no way to verify what was truly going on along the border of Pendrath and Tintagel any more than I could verify my dream of something that may have taken place more than a century ago.

“Right,” I said hollowly. “I’ll be careful.”

“What was the other question?”

“The other?”

“You said there were two.”

“Oh. Right.” I blushed slightly.

“Thatkind of question is it?” Rychel crowed. “If it’s about my brother, this might get awkward.”

“I’ll keep it as un-awkward as I can, but I really do have to ask this. I’m sorry,” I said quickly. “I know the Siabra can’t have children. But I’m afraid I can. And I don’t want to. Is there anything you know of...”

“I can give you something,” Rychel cut me off. “There’s a spell and there’s a herb. Or you can be on the extra safe side and do both. But if it’s my brother you’re worried about, don’t be. He’s already dealt with his side of things.”

“I-it’s not...” I stuttered, feeling my cheeks suffuse with heat. “I mean, I honestly don’t know. I just want to be... safe. I don’t want to bring a child into this world. You can see the state of things just like I can.”

My brother was busy trying to take over a continent. Undead children ran rampant in an abandoned fae city. I had accidentally unleashed a powerful Valtain general from prison and now she thought we were enemies. Oh, and I was trapped in a court filled with people who thought I was scum to be stepped on and wouldn’t care if I was knifed in my sleep.

Those all seemed like pretty good reasons to avoid ever bringing a child into the mix.

Rychel nodded. “Oh, I’m with you. This is why I plan to never mate. I’m happy like this. Alone.”

I raised my eyebrows. “Really? Never? That’s an awfully long time.”

“That’s the plan,” she chirped. “Anyhow, after what happened with Nodori, my brother felt pretty much the same as you do. I made the mistake of bringing up the subject when he got back to court with you.”

“And?” I was very interested now.

“And he basically said to mind my own business but that the Siabra wouldn’t be getting any more babies out of him.” Rychel smirked in a way that reminded me of Draven. “Sephone won’t be pleased, if she ever finds out. I’m sure she still has hopes for Lyrastra.”

I thought of what Lyrastra had said and the way the queen had touched Avriel so brazenly. “I’m not so sure about that. But maybe.”

Rychel cocked an eyebrow. “Oh? Well, you can tell me another time.”

I nodded. Suddenly I was very tired. And yet, if I went back to the suite and fell asleep... What if I had another dream?

The very idea made me even more weary.

It was one thing to run from danger but when the danger wasme... there weren’t many places to turn.
