The impossible was unfolding before my very eyes.

It was a day for impossibilities. A day for leaps of faith.

From beneath Nightclaw's muscular frame, concealed beneath his thick fur coat, a hidden secret had been unveiled.

Wings unfurled from his sides, stretching outwards like a revelation. Bones elongated and sinew stretched as with a surge of energy, hidden mechanisms within Nightclaw's powerful frame extended. The wings had a membranous structure, nearly translucent. They were veined with threads of gold and covered with soft, short golden fur.

The wings expanded, catching the currents of air and casting a long shadow beneath us where Avriel stood gaping.

I couldn't help it. I grinned and waved.

Beneath me Nightclaw was emitting a low, rumbling, his body vibrating beneath me. To my delight, I realized he was purring.

We circled the island, each wing beat a symphony of strength, as the powerful muscles beneath me propelled us upwards. Nightclaw's wings cleaved through the air with a soft whooshing sound as we soared above the chasm.

From the corner of my eye, I glimpsed Avriel darting about below. He ran to the web of rope bridges encircling the island. I assumed he was frantic to cross to the pillar before we could reach it.

He fumbled about with something under the thick ropes.

When he stood upright again, there was something in his hands. I caught sight of smooth wood and a glint of black metal.

A crossbow.

I cried out as the bolt was released, urging Nightclaw upwards.

The bolt sliced through the air with deadly intent, just as Nightclaw shifted upwards, beating his wings with a vengeance.

The projectile clipped one outstretched wing. I felt it as if it had pierced through my very own skin.

Nightclaw let out a guttural growl, carrying with it the essence of both fury and suffering.

My heart clenched, a gush of fury filling me with determination.

I could feel Nightclaw's rage and anguish echoing in my own soul.

I urged him downwards, sensing his grim determination as he complied.

Avriel was looking up at us in alarm, frantically loading a second bolt.

I held out my hands, gripping the battlecat’s body tightly with my thighs.

With all my focus, I channeled my inner fire, willing the gauntlets I wore to help me aim. A crackle of sparks danced along my fingertips.

A concentrated torrent of searing fire erupted from my hands, narrowing into a stream resembling the lash of a whip.

The fiery torrent cascaded downwards leaving behind a trail of shimmering embers that painted the air.

Within seconds, Avriel was encompassed. Flames licked at his body, ensnaring him in an inescapable inferno.

I had only a moment to take in his screams of agony before he stumbled backwards, his arms flailing as he pitched into the gaping chasm and was claimed by its depths.

Did he turn to ashes as he fell as Vesper had done?

He was my enemy, but as he fell into the abyss surrounded by a maelstrom of heat, I felt nothing. No satisfaction. No newfound sense of safety.

I simply wanted this to be over. I wanted to be done.

Somewhere, Kaye waited for me, alone and afraid.
