The name he called me sent me trembling, but still, I did not stop.

I reached the cottage door, breathlessly pushed it open, and...

CHAPTER 29 - MORGAN

Iawoke in my bed inthe castle with Draven nowhere to be seen.

Someone was shaking me by the shoulder. For a single confused moment, I thought it was my mother and that I was a child again.

Then the person’s face came into view.

“Uncle!” I pushed the hand away and sat upright, rubbing sleep from my eyes. “What is it? What are you doing here?”

Caspar Starweaver’s white hair was a wild cloud around his head as he sank down onto the side of my bed.

“Do you know where Lancelet is?” I demanded, sitting up and starting to braid back my disheveled hair. “She wasn’t in her cell when I checked last night. I was looking for you. Did you get my note?”

“Yes, that’s why I’ve come. They’ve taken her. They’ve taken Lancelet.”

“Taken her where?” My heart began to pound. I didn’t have to ask who had taken her.

“The second round of the tournament. She was brought to the arena.”

My hand flew to my mouth. “Oh, by the Three. This is all my fault.”

My uncle looked confused. “Your fault?”

“Fenyx told me yesterday that Lancelet was to be executed,” I said, speaking as quickly as I could. “I suggested that execution by hanging was too easy for her.” My uncle’s white brows raised. “I’m supposed to be one of them, remember? Besides, I was simply trying to buy her more time. So I suggested—”

“Yes, I see.” Caspar Starweaver sighed. “The tournament.”

“I thought it would mean a delay, not the other way around. The next round wasn’t supposed to be for another week or more,” I said desperately.

“Well, apparently, Arthur believes things went very well yesterday, and so he wants to move up the timeline. You were there, yes? You saw the sword?”

I clenched my jaw. “I saw everything. Much more than I wanted to. Arthur has no idea how to wield it and neither does anyone else. But he’ll just keep killing people until something happens. Even if the sword’s power kills half of Camelot next time.”
