“Oh my god! Is that the best that you can come up with? Jayshree Singh, you give me one good reason to show that you want to marry that boy for the right reasons, or I’m going to lock you in the dungeon for the rest of your life,” she threatened.

“Umm, the fact that he and his whole family will be walking into the ballroom of our palace in exactly an hour?”

My mother, who never showed any fear in her whole life, turned pale at the thought of telling Deep’s father that she wouldn’t let me marry his son because I didn’t give her a good enough reason for inflicting him and his sister on our entire family.

“Damn it, Jayshree! What are we going to do?” she wailed.

I stood up and put my arms around her.

“You’re going to go down and welcome his family. And we’re going to go through with this. It will be all right, Ma. Trust me. Marriage doesn’t always have to be about love, and romance, and all that crap.”

My mother shook her head sadly.

“No, beta. But I don’t think you can be happy in a loveless marriage.”

“Love is not a guarantee of happiness, Ma. You should know that! Didn’t my uncle claim to love his wife, and weren’t they the unhappiest couple on earth, who ruined all our lives?”

“That was different. Being in love might not guarantee happiness, but never falling in love with your spouse is definitely a guarantee of unhappiness, Jayshree. And marrying someone for the wrong reasons is the first step in that direction.”

“Umm, almost everyone in our circles marries for money and security, Ma,” I pointed out.

“You’re not everyone, Jayshree. You’re my daughter. I didn’t raise you to be mercenary. I raised you to know the value of love.”

“Oh, I do know the value of love,” I said, bitterly.

My mother looked shocked.

“Jayshree…”

“Ma, I need to get dressed. I’ll meet you downstairs,” I said, coldly.

My mother pursed her lips in disapproval, but she didn’t press me further.

“Fine! You’re an adult, and if you wish to destroy your life, I can’t stop you,” she said, just as coldly, and swept out of the room.

I sat down on the stool in front of the dresser and stared into the mirror blindly.

Did I want to go through with this marriage? No.

Did I want love? Yes.

Could pigs fly? No.

So, did I have a choice? No.

I had to marry Deep and make the most of it.

There was a knock at the door. I groaned at the thought of yet another argument with a concerned member of my family. It was probably Nivy. She still hadn’t given up on telling me not to marry Deep.

“Come in, but fair warning, I’ll kick you out of the window if you irritate me,” I called out.

The door swung open.

“Is there anything I can say that won’t irritate you?”

I swung around at the sound of Aryan’s voice.

“What… what are you doing here?”
