Aryan rolled his eyes at that. If it was so easy, he’d have forgotten her and moved on long ago. Whatever it was that was simmering between them was too strong to cast aside so easily. But Jessie had her stubborn face on, which meant that she was completely convinced about what she was saying, and would meet any argument by putting her hands over her ears and singinglalalalalalalalala.

He sighed at the prospect of being civil to Jessie. They had been many things to each other over the years. Never civil, though. He wondered if they were even capable of it. Still, milady wanted it, and he would give it to her. Or die trying. If she didn’t kill him first.

“All right, Jessie. If that’s what you want,” he said wearily.

“Thank you,” she said, with a gracious nod, that made him want to muss her hair or dunk her in the palace pond. Whatever it took to shake her out of princess mode.

This ‘civil’ thing was so going to give him a stomach ulcer.

CHAPTER12

JESSIE

Iwanted to smack that smug look off Aryan’s face, the one that said that he knew something I didn’t. I remembered just in time that I had resolved to be civil to the bastard.

So I took a deep breath and willed Nivy to come and pick me up soon. And for the first time in my life, my prayers were answered. With a screech that scared the crows off the roof of the public toilet, she pulled up in her father’s old Swift.

I shot Aryan a polite smile that didn’t reach my eyes and turned to go. I needn’t have bothered.

Nivy got out of the haphazardly parked car and sauntered towards us with a knowing grin.

“So? How’s it going?” she asked, looking from me to Aryan and back, curiosity shining in her big eyes.

“Jeez, Nivy! Obvious much?” I muttered as I walked past her.

“It’s going… great. Jessie was a big help at the clinic,” said Aryan.

“Really? That’s all?”

I rolled my eyes and opened the passenger door. She sounded so deflated as if all her grand plans had come crashing. Which was true.

I turned around and leaned against the open door.

“We’ve decided to put our differences aside and be civil to each other. Problem solved,” I said.

“Civil?”

She spat the word out as if it were a bad word.

“Yes, and that’s all you’re getting. There won’t be any bloodshed at your wedding. So, can you get your meddlesome ass back into the car and take me home, please?”

Nivy glared at her brother before stomping over to the driver’s side, cursing under her breath. I tuned her out as I turned to stare at Aryan one last time. He was staring back at me and the intensity of his gaze made me take a step back until the edge of the car door dug into my side.

How on earth was I to be civil to this man when he looked at me as if he wanted to gobble me up like a bowl of ice cream on a hot day?

Nivy cleared her throat meaningfully and I got into the car hastily and shut the door.

“Clear your schedule for the dance practice, Aryan,” she called, as she got into the driver’s seat.

Aryan looked taken aback.

“Wait! What? What dance practice?”

“You’re dancing at my sangeet, brother dear. Even if it’s the last thing you do in life,” she said happily.

He groaned and came up to us, resting his arm on my window as he bent to growl at his sister.

“Not even in your dreams, Nivy,” he warned. “I don’t have time for this crap.”
