“You guys carry on, but I have to go.”

“Aryan, wait! I’ll come with you to the hospital,” said Arshia.

“No,” he said firmly. “Please stay and finish your lunch, Arshia. I’ll see you around.”

He shot his mother a tight smile that promised a long and painful conversation when he got home and took his leave. His phone rang as he was leaving the restaurant. It was Nivy.

“What the fuck do you think you’re playing at Aryan?”

“Hello to you too, sis.”

“Fuck that! Just tell me why you lied to Jess about breaking up with Arshia,” snarled Nivy.

“What? I didn’t lie about that!”

“Then why are you playing Happy Families with her at the Taj?”

“How on earth do you know that?”

“Jessie and I saw you sucking up to them with our own eyes, dumbass! How else?”

“I wouldn’t put it past you to put a GPS tracker in my underwear, you psycho,” he snapped.

“Don’t change the topic, Aryan!”

“Look, it isn’t what you think it is. I can explain.”

Suddenly, Jessie came on the line. Her voice sounded raw, as if she had been crying.

“What else can you explain, Aryan? What about the fact that you’re being nice to me because you need money for the community clinic? Can you explain that, too?”

Aryan pinched the bridge of his nose, trying to make sense of what she was saying.

“Care to repeat that?”

“Let me put it this way, Aryan. You don’t need to pimp yourself to me to get funding for the community clinic. All you need to do is send in a written application to the Foundation,” she replied.

Aryan’s throat closed as the meaning of Jessie’s words sank in. Was that what she thought about him? He smiled bitterly as he realised that his father had been eerily accurate all those years ago. Sooner or later, money was bound to come between him and Jessie. He hadn’t expected it to happen so soon, though. Nor had he expected it to happen in the form of such a personal attack.

“Jessie, do you understand what you’re saying?”

“It’s not me who’s saying this, Aryan. It’s your girlfriend who said it.”

He groaned silently as he realised that Arshia was behind all this. No wonder she had looked so smug.

“What did Arshia say to you?”

“She didn’t tell me anything. I overheard her talking to her mother. And you know what? If you want to announce your engagement at Nivy’s wedding, feel free. You don’t have to worry about me making a scene.”

There was a yelp in the background, and Nivy was back on the line.

“Maybe Jess won’t, but I will make a scene like you’ve never seen before, you overgrown horse’s ass. If you marry Arshia, I swear to God I will cut you out of my life forever,” she threatened.

“Stop calling me names, Nivy, and put Jessie on the line. Now,” he ordered.

“She doesn’t want to talk to you.”

“Where are you guys right now?”
