He raised a disbelieving eyebrow.

“You’re kicking me out in the middle of the night? Seriously?”

“Hardly! It’s almost morning, and the staff will start going about soon. If anyone sees you, it won’t be long before my mother finds out.”

Aryan crossed his arms over his chest, looking like an aggrieved Greek god.

“So you’re treating me like a dirty little secret, Jessie? Will you hire an apartment for us to use whenever you’re in the mood for a quick fuck, then?”

“Stop it! You’re distorting everything,” I hissed.

What we had shared last night was something beautiful, and he was making it sound so ugly. If my ankle hadn’t been throbbing thanks to my early morning shenanigans, I would so have kicked him in the nuts.

“I’m just stating facts,” he snapped, throwing on his clothes in quick, furious movements.

“Aryan, you’re over-reacting,” I said, wearily.

This was not how I wanted us to end things.

“No, no. I understand, Jessie. This was just a fling for you. An itch that you scratched. Now we can go back to being friends, or whatever the fuck we used to be.”

I sat up and glared at him.

“Do you really want to tell the world that we slept together? What next, Aryan? Will you tell your mother? Or my mother? Let’s tell everyone, and see what happens. Our mothers will tie us to Nivy and Veer’s mandap and get us hitched in a two-for-one deal before we even blink. Is that what you want? To be forced to marry a girl you’re not even sure you like?”

That made him stop in his tracks.

“Of course, I like you, Jess! Why would you even think that I don’t?”

I snorted loudly in derision.

“Oh, please. I can’t deny that you want me, but you don’t like or respect me. You think I’m a spoilt, entitled flake,” I accused.

Aryan opened his mouth to argue, but I broke in impatiently.

“Just leave, Aryan, before we get into trouble. We’ll figure this out. But now is not the time.”

ARYAN

She was kicking him out!

He couldn’t believe that after all this, she was treating him like a fling.

“Fine! I’ll leave, and we can forget this ever happened,” he bit out, picking up his wallet and watch.

“No! Stop over-reacting, you big galoot! I want this to happen again. We just need to keep it under the radar until we figure out where we’re going.”

Aryan knew she was right, but every fibre of his body protested at being treated like a dirty secret. He wanted to flaunt their relationship in front of the whole world because he was proud to be with Jessie. Which begged the question… was she ashamed to be with him? Was that why she wanted to hide their relationship?

“It’s your call, Jess,” he muttered, slipping on his shoes.

She knelt up on the bed and caught him by the arm.

“Aryan, listen to me. Do you remember the media shit-storm that happened when the press found out about Nivy and Veer?”

He shuddered as he remembered having to turn his phone off for two days because some reporters had got hold of his number and were blowing up his phone, asking for information about their family.
