And she had lied to him.

As if on cue, his phone rang. It was Jessie. Aryan decided to lead with the facts.

“You lied to me.”

“I can explain.”

“The photograph is self-explanatory, Jessie. You told me you were taking your mother out for a movie when you really were on a date with that long-haired idiot.”

“It wasn’t like that.”

“My mother tricked me into going out with Yash, just as your mother tricked you into meeting Arshia’s family.”

“It’s not the same thing, Jessie.”

“Why the hell not?”

She had the gall to be offended by that. Aryan was surprised there wasn’t steam coming out of his ears at the fact that he had to explain such a simple thing.

“Because I couldn’t walk out on my mother’s guests without humiliating her, but you certainly could have cancelled your date. You just chose not to. What does that say about you, Jessie?”

“You tell me, Aryan. What do you think it says?”

Her voice had gone soft, but she sounded furious. Aryan didn’t care.

“It says that you got tired of slumming, and decided to go out with someone from your own circle,” he bit out.

“You can’t be serious, Aryan. Do you know how ridiculous you sound? We made love. Over and over again!”

“And yet, you went out with Yash, and were even holding hands with him!”

“Okay, first of all, I wasn’t holding hands with him. He helped me up after I tripped in those bloody heels. Secondly, I only went out with him because when my mother asked me for one good reason for why I wanted to cancel the date, I couldn’t tell her about you without discussing it with you first.”

“And there we have it! You don’t want to tell your mother about me. Why is that, Jessie? Is it because you’re ashamed of me?”

“I’m not ashamed of you, ya big moron. I’m damn proud of you! But you’re never going to accept that, because you have this… this bigprejudicein your head, and you will never get over it, no matter how much I love you,” she yelled into the phone.

Before Aryan could reply, she hung up on him.

Jessie had said a lot of things. But Aryan could only hear one thing. That she loved him. And it was clear that he had lost her.

CHAPTER20

JESSIE

Iknew Aryan was going to be upset when he saw that photograph. He had every right to be. But I hadn’t realised that he was going to be such a stubborn ass about it.

He didn’t even try to see it from my point of view. He didn’t even allow me to explain. It was as if he was waiting for me to mess up. Maybe, at some level, he wanted this relationship to fail. And this incident allowed him to rightfully blame me for the demise of our relationship, instead of facing up to his own prejudice.

And fool that I was, I had even told him that I loved him. Ugh! Now I had to go through a very painful day of avoiding him while pretending that everything was hunky-dory.

Today was Nivy and Veer’s haldi and mehendi, and tomorrow was the sangeet. All eyes were going to be on us. Even if we weren’t dancing together, we had to present a united front because the slightest hint of coolness would lead to uncomfortable questions from both our families. Besides, I owed Nivy and Veer a peaceful wedding. I had already brought enough drama into their lives, thanks to my ill-fated engagement with Deep.

“What’s wrong, Jess?” asked Yash, throwing himself into the chair next to me.

“Nothing,” I replied hastily, avoiding his gaze.

“Is this about the photograph in the newspaper? Is Aryan upset about it?”
