“I’m a reverse harem author,” she says.

Ollie and I look at her blankly. I expect Artie to acknowledge the genre, but even he looks clueless.

“Harem?” Ollie says. “Is that a Middle Eastern thing?”

“Um, no,” Susan says. “Well, technically, the term originated from the practice of taking many wives. But this genre kind of spins that on its head.”

“So it’s one girl for many men,” I say.

“Wow,” Ollie says. “I like that chick. Does she have like a harem for her army of men?”

“It isn’t like that,” Susan says. “There are no harems, per se. It’s more about the guys giving all their love and attention—among other things—to the heroine.”

“And does anything happen between the guys?” I ask, trying to make sense of what she’s saying.

“No, the woman is the center of attention and attraction. It’s different from being a throuple or polyamorous. But you know what? I’m sure I’m boring you.”

“No way,” I say, leaning on my elbow. She just got more interesting. “Tell me more.”

Susan looks like she regrets telling the truth. “What else do you want to know?”

“This reverse harem thing,” I say, “is that something you’re interested in?”

I expect her to say no right away. She looks too vanilla to be into something as kinky as that. Besides, I’m smart enough to know that not all authors are what they write.

To my surprise, she says, “I never thought about it that way.” My dick hardens. I can’t believe it. Did I actually get her to consider it? The thought is heady.

“I thought the line between fiction and reality was really thin for writers.”

She laughs mirthlessly. “Yeah, but that’s not true in my case.”

“So, you’ve never tried this thing,” I say.

“No,” Susan says.

“But if circumstances presented it to you, you would?” Ollie prods.

“I don’t know,” Susan says, sounding genuinely confused. “My parents taught me not to say no to adventures.”

“So, it’s something you’re looking to explore?” Artie says.

“I mean, never say never.” Susan laughs again, but I detect an undercurrent of tension.

“You’re bluffing,” I say. She looks up, her dark brown eyes meeting my green ones. I don’t know if it’s the low light or the way the air is charged with tension, but they appear as dark as the sea on a stormy night.

“I’m game for it if you are,” she says, not flinching.

Ollie whoops under his breath while Artie swears under his. He says something, but I’m lost in her until it feels like the entire world has melted away but us.

My lips twitch. This is going to be way more fun than I thought. Game on.

“What about now?” I ask.

A flicker of unease. “What?”

I stand up. “My brothers and I have shared a lot of things. I’m sure we can add one more experience to the list.”

She blinks. This isn’t the way she thought the conversation was going.
