ARTIE

Ollie leans against the car as I fill it up with gas. “Check out the leggy blonde, four o’clock,” he says, whistling under his breath.

I roll my eyes. “I don’t have time.”

“Oh, get off your high horse, would you?” Ollie says. “Look at that ass. I haven’t seen a perkier one in my life.”

“Stop ogling,” I say. “You have a problem.”

He grins. “Only when they’re hot, and I don’t mean it lightly. Just look at her.”

I peek through the body of the truck, fully expecting one of his trashy choices—skimpy clothes, bleached-blonde hair, and tits all but out to the world. But no, I’m pleasantly surprised.

This one has her natural blonde hair piled on top of her head. She’s wearing a sweatshirt and joggers paired with ratty sneakers. I can see the silhouette of her perfect body as she struggles to put gas in her car.

I almost drop the pump in my hand and walk over to help her. I’m fucking mesmerized. As if sensing my intense gaze on her, she starts to turn around before she’s distracted by Walt, the gas station attendant.

I grip the pump harder, imagining that I’m kneading her perfect ass that fits snugly against the joggers she’s wearing.

“She’s not your type,” I say, tearing my eyes off her with some difficulty. She looks like a smart girl, not one of those brain-dead zombies my brother has a penchant for dating. And by dating, I mean fucking, because I haven’t seen him with the same girl two days in a row.

Ollie scowls. “What exactly is my type?”

“Girls who don’t have a brain,” I say.

“That’s so unfair,” Ollie protests.

“As if you have meaningful conversations with your conquests,” I say. “You forget their names by the next morning.”

“We’re just too busy doing other stuff. Besides, I like it when they’re good with their mouth, and this one seems exactly like that.” Ollie smirks. I have to resist punching him in the face. I’m not a violent person, so I don’t know where this is coming from.

I allow myself another look at the girl. I don’t even know her, and she’s already having such an effect on me.

Ollie follows my gaze.

Even though we look more or less alike, with brown hair and piercing green eyes, he’s the one most girls go after. While I like to stay inside, Ollie spends his time outdoors, mostly shirtless. His muscles are always out on display, while mine are safely hidden away under my shirt.

Ollie might not be the brightest person in the room, but as soon as he turns on, I can practically see the figurative panties dropping.

“What’s going on here?” says a gruff voice behind me. We both turn around to see Ed with two bags of groceries in his hands. He dumps them in the back of the truck.

“I thought one of you idiots was coming in to help me with the bags,” he says, glaring at me.

“We were distracted,” Ollie says.

There’s the sound of an engine coming to life. We look up to see the car drive away.

“At a gas station?” Ed says, looking around to make a point. “By what exactly?”

Ollie smiles. “You just missed her.”

Ed looks at me. “You too, huh?”

I put my hands up. “I’m not made of stone, Ed. I’m not you.”

Ed’s lips purse. I don’t remember the last time Ed dated, not since Fiona. But that’s more of a choice.
