“Nope.” I popped out the ‘p’ and held my chin up high. “It’s not your fault. I gave a football player the benefit of the doubt. It’s my own fault for believing he would be any different from any other athlete I’ve encountered in this school.” I replied sarcastically.

He laughed hesitantly, but then again, maybe his chest was heaving because this was more exercise than he was used to. “No. No. That’s not what happened. This whole thing is my fault, and it’s one huge misunderstanding.”

“Misunderstanding is accidentally showing up at the wrong time for a tutoring session. A misunderstanding isn’t the guy I’m tutoring thinking I’m some clueless bimbo trying to get into his pants,” I replied with a cocked brow. I was still walking, and he was still saddled at my side.

“That’s not what happened.”

I scrunched my face in annoyance. “Uh, you sure about that? Because I was there. Not you.”

“I know, but I spoke to Tanner after.”

I raised my hand, and his eyes cut to my fingers that were splayed over his mouth. “I don’t want to hear anything more. I’m late for class. We can talk about this later.”

Before he could say anything else, I rushed out of his way and headed straight across campus without looking.

In my rush, I realized I left a book in the library, so I pulled my phone out of my bag and texted Hazel, hoping she was still there and could pick it up for me.

Just as I pressed send, I bashed into something hard.

“Ouch,” I wailed as I lost my balance and nearly fell to my knees. Luckily, I was caught by a pair of muscular arms before I could face plant on the concrete.

Great for my face since I was inches away from the floor, but not so much for my ass. High in the air, I could feel the cold air grazing against my butt cheeks, which could only mean one thing.

I was flashing my thong across campus.

“Aster, are you okay?”

Fan-fucking-tastic.

That voice was too familiar, and I felt my body heating with embarrassment, but there was nothing I could do in this position. I shunted out of his hold and refused to look at him as I dusted off my pleated skirt. If only they weren’t so comfortable in the summer months, I might not have had my ass on such a flagrant display right now.

“I’m sorry,” Tanner said, because I was still ignoring his presence.

“For what?” I finally looked up at him. Yup, frustratingly, he was still as beautiful as he was the other day. Tanned, and chiseled, he looked like a hot He-Man with that long hair, but I doubted he knew who that was. He was probably too busy throwing a ball around to watch high-quality eighties television.

His gaze flicked down to my skirt, and then he did something I was almost certain got him everything he wanted. He flashed me the most devastating smile I’d ever seen.

Perfect, straight teeth with plump lips. That smile made it hard to stay annoyed, but I would persevere.

Tanner raised his hand like he was about to touch me but then dropped it because he thought better of it. “For everything. For whacking into you just now and for treating you like shit the other day.”

Not this again. Why was everyone hell bent on discussing yet another embarrassing moment in my life? I waved him off. “Whatever. It’s fine. It’s in the past now.”

“It is?”

“Yeah. I should have said no to Ralph the minute he floated the idea of tutoring you.” He frowned as he looked at the floor, then back at me. “We aren’t a good match, and I knew that before I met you.”

“We aren’t?”

I didn’t care that I’d clearly offended him, because, to be frank, he deserved it. He shouldn’t have spoken to me the way he did. “Really? Because I was kind of hoping we could pretend the other day didn’t happen and start again.”

I nearly choked on my own spit as I glared up at him in shock. “Sorry, what?” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I must have misheard.

“I’d really like you to tutor me if you’d be willing to take me on.”

I had no idea what to say. Was this really happening? What the hell was the other day all about, then?

“Aster?”
