Page 2 of Teach Me

I bit my tongue and moved my textbook to the side because maybe I was just over-reacting. Maybe she’d be the tutor to finally help me get a passing grade without having to bribe the teachers. That was what Ralph, the tutor co-ordinator promised me anyway, and this was the fifth one. I couldn’t be that much of a lost case, could I?

“I don’t take biology,” I deadpanned.

Her eyes grew wide, and I could tell she was trying to look unfazed that my response was less than excited to be in her presence. “Oh, I know,” she giggled like a drunk sailor. “I just thought it was a good joke.” Another laugh, but this time it sounded forced and embarrassed.

“Sure,” I drawled out, and took a deep breath, holding back my annoyance. If Ralph screwed me over again, I would kill him.

Rachel took a seat next to me and breathed sharply when my arm accidentally brushed against hers. She paused, and her chest heaved as though she thought we were having a moment.

We weren’t.

“Sorry,” I mumbled as I grabbed my copy of ‘Taming of the Shrew,’ and lifted it high up so she couldn’t see my face anymore. “Can we start with this?” I played with the spine before dropping it on the table. “All the old English language is confusing the crap out of me.”

She let out a soft laugh, which turned into this weird, loud cackle. I tried to ignore it and opened my book, but it was just so loud.

My eyes scanned the text, and I tried to grasp the words, but again, I was lost. When I didn’t hear a peep out of Rachel, I looked up to see her twirling her hair and smiling vacantly. Apparently, she’d been watching me that whole time, which was a little creepy.

“Rachel?” I pressed, but she still didn’t seem to get it. “Can you help me with this or not?”

That was when she scrunched her nose, letting out another obnoxious giggle and only confirming my suspicions. She wasn’t here to teach me anything. She looked around before leaning in closer with a mischievous smile. Dropping her shoulders, she let her shirt dip so I could see her cleavage. I was too much of a gentleman to look, so I just blinked in the opposite direction. “I’ve got a confession to make.”

Here we go.

“What?”

Rachel flicked her long hair over her shoulder before saying, “I’ve never taken English Lit before.” She looked up to the sky, humming. “Oh wait, maybe I did as a freshman, but I just hired some nerd to do my homework for me to pass the class. I’m an art major, so none of this matters to me.”

“Then why are you tutoring me?”

She bit down on the corner of her lip, and I was certain that look got her out of a lot of trouble in the past. “Imayhave convinced Ralph to let me tutor you so I could get an introduction.” She was giving me this cutesy smile as if that would make her fucking up my future okay.

What was with her? Did she not get my desperation? I needed someone to tutor me, not someone to treat me like I was a sideshow accepting admissions.

“Oh.” It was all I could muster because I was focusing all my power on not yelling at her in front of the entire library.

“Yeah.” She shrugged her shoulders, that smile growing wider as she relaxed into her seat. I guessed she thought she was here for the long haul. “You’re hardly on campus. Ineversee you in the cafeteria, and Aiden stopped throwing his parties after he got with that girl.” She flitted her hand, waving off the rudeness of calling Alyssathat girl.“I’ve wanted to meet you for the longest time, and I was tired of waiting. So, when this opportunity presented itself, I couldn’t say no.”

This opportunity? She was talking about me like I was a real estate investment.

“Okay.”

“I just think we’d really get on, but you’re just so hard to find.”

“And what makes you think that we’d get along?” Her eyes tracked my face, and she shunted her shoulders just a little more, clearly unable to detect the disdain in my voice. I could only hope for her sake that was she was embarrassed over this whole thing and didn’t think that it actually worked.

“You know,” I chuckled as realistically as I could, even though I was seething inside. She seemed to buy it, slowly swaying her body toward me as she tried to tempt me to look down her cleavage again. I mean seriously, did she think that all football players were horn dogs? “It’s really interesting you should say that.” I gave her a lopsided grin, dropped my gaze to her collarbone, and let her believe for just a second that I was interested.

“Oh, yeah?” Her face lit up with pride.

“Yeah. Because you’re the fourth girl to try this stunt in the last three weeks.” She closed her mouth almost instantly. “Did you ever stop to think that maybe you couldn’t find me because I didn’t want to be found?”

Rachel frowned, her lips contorted, and her entire face looked like one of those sad clown masks. I tried not to laugh because to be fair to her; she was a good-looking girl, but that didn’t change the fact that I wasn’t interested, or that she was pissing me off because she could cost me my spot on the football team.

“Oh, the fourth?”

“Mhm.” I quickly gathered up my stuff, knowing that if I stayed longer, I might say something I regret.

She gathered up her things with me, and I knew the only way to get away from her was to leave. “Now, if you’ll excuse me, Robin.”
