“Do NOT run a background check on the girl. Please.”

“I won’t if you tell me why you were asking about her in the first place.”

“Fine. Do you know anyone she’s tutored before?”

He shook his head, still looking somewhat confused by the whole thing. “No. from my understanding she only takes on non-scholarship students, which rules out most of the football team.” Narrowing his eyes, he pointed at me. “Actually, you know what? I think she dated that idiot on the hockey team. What was his name again?” He wracked his brain, sounding out a few variations before settling. “Ah, yes! Connor. That was it. He’s the one with that terrible mullet with his initials carved on the side.”

“Why would anyone do that?”

Matty shrugged. “Don’t know, but I hear the hazing on the hockey team is crazy. Could have been something to do with that. His dad is a coach for the team and the only reason he was allowed on it. The guy doesn’t know the difference between a puck and a baseball on a good day.

Connor. The name ruminated in my thoughts, because I never thought Aster, of all people, would date an athlete. She seemed hell bent on proving that the female population could live without men… which in all honesty; she was probably right, it just wouldn’t be as fun.

“Are you trying to get her to tutor you?”

“How’d you guess?” I said sarcastically as we both descended the stairs.

“Because I’ve heard she’s the absolute best, and judging by Coach’s words last night, you’re going to need all the help you can get. She’s a wizard. A real Ginny Weasley, though. I know a few people who were on the verge of failing out of school, but she got them back on track in less than a semester.”

I raised a brow. “Am I supposed to know who Ginny Weasley is?”

He shook his head in disbelief. “How’d you get into college?”

I stared back at him. “Because I can throw a ball further than almost anyone in the country at a collegiate level.”

“That’s astounding confidence for a guy that’s been in Aiden’s shadow this past year.”

“Is it though? Because I’m essentially admitting that I’m not smart enough to be here.”

He patted me on the back, offering me a weak consolation smile. “Is that why you were asking about Aster? Because you somehow convinced her to tutor you?”

“I wish,” I snorted out. “She was supposed to be tutoring me, but I kind of screwed it all up. Now, she won’t even look at me with anything other than contempt.”

“Ah, I’m sure you can change that. All you’ve got to do is talk her into it.”

“Because it’s that easy. I tried talking to her yesterday, but I only pissed her off more.”

Matty narrowed his eyes. “What did you do? Were you harassing her? Please don’t tell me you stalked her like you did Hayden?”

“I never stalked Hayden.” Defending myself against the accusation was useless because the guys liked to laugh about the fact I had a thing about making sure girls got home safe. They would understand if they had sisters, but none of them did. “And I didn’t harass Aster. I just got the wrong end of the stick and ran with it like an overeager dog.”

Matty pushed his lips from side to side. “Mhm, do you still want her to tutor you?”

“More than anything.”

“Then I’d suggest a different tack. Get to know her. Find out what interests her before you push her into working with you. From the very little I know of Aster, she seems like the kind of girl that once she makes her mind up about something, it’s very hard to convince her otherwise.”

“Don’t I know it,” I mumbled. “She’s stubborn as a mule.”

“Exactly. So, like I said, just ease yourself into it, let her think you’re interested inher, not just what you can get out of her.”

“I’m not trying to sleep with her,” I said with furrowed brows, because yeah, she was hot as hell, but I was focused on the prize of staying on the football team, not getting my dick wet.

Matty couldn’t hide his smile now. He pointed at me and shook his head. “Are you sure about that? Because I’ve heard and seen it all before.”

“No, really. I just need her help to get a passing grade. That’s all.”

“Fine. Then just talk to her like a friend. Like you do with Hayden, Reign and Britt.”
