Why did the mere thought of him putting his hands on her make me want to grab his throat and yell, ‘Mine?’

I never said I was sane, but Aster was doing a good job of making me feel like I was losing my sanity, and she was putting it back together at the same time.

“Tanner?” Rachel pressed, and I finally looked at her. Giving me a demure smile, I couldn’t bring myself to smile back because I didn’t want her getting ideas. I was so far from interested in her, it should have been obvious, but I couldn’t help but think she thought she still had a chance even after the stunt she pulled.

“I’m sorry. What were you talking about?” I looked between Rachel and a few of the other people, but I hadn’t taken in their names. I was too busy watching Aster, who was stuck with two sorority girls, and although I was able to mask my disinterest in these people, she wasn’t as trained in the art of influencing. Standing there, she was scowling at me, and I laughed because I knew she was inwardly cursing me out for suggesting we come here for five minutes. It had been about fifty-five now,

“I asked if you thought Covey U would have a good chance of winning all three championships this year?” Rachel spoke again, drawing my attention to her.

“Three?”

“Baseball, Hockey and Football, of course,” she blanched out like it was ridiculous I needed the clarification.

With furrowed brows, I nodded, feigning interest because, damn, she was about as interesting as a can of gray paint. “Uh, yeah. I guess so. I don’t know enough about the other sports to give you an accurate analysis, though. You’d probably want to ask these guys.” I dipped my chin to the hockey team, none of them looking interested in any of this either.

Rachel frowned, probably upset that she could see I was constantly looking over her shoulder to check on Aster. Yup, she was still glaring, and I mouthed the words, ‘I’m sorry,’ which had her scowl softening slightly. Well, Aster was either softening or my contacts were blurring from overuse.

Rachel huffed out a laugh, shaking her head. “How do younotknow?” She cackled, and it was obnoxiously loud as she looked between the group of people as though she expected them to laugh along with her.

“Yeah, there’s not much else to do while you’re sitting on the bench,” Connor laughed as he swatted me on the back. I was pushed forward in surprise as I looked at him incredulously.

“Connor!” Scotty balked next to him, staring at him in disbelief. “That’s not how you speak to people.”

“No, you’re right.” He looked at Rachel, and said, “It’s because he’s too busy fucking his tutor so she’ll help him cheat to be thinking about anything else.”

I swallowed, and the circle went silent as they watched my reaction. I didn’t give any of them one, though. I just quickly glanced at Aster, worried that somehow she had incredible hearing, and she knew exactly what we were talking about.

Still bored out of her mind, it didn’t look like she’d heard anything.

“You’re such an idiot,” Brooks grumbled, shaking his head as he and Scotty looked at each other, silently wondering how they put up with a guy like him.

Connor raised his hands. “What? If Aster was my tutor, I’d be doing the same thing.” He looked up at the ceiling and blew out a long whistle. “Oh, wait, I did. Let’s hope it ends better for you.”

“Connor,” Scotty warned.

I held my hand up and looked back at Connor. “And why exactly do you think it’s going to end badly?” I goaded him because I was genuinely interested in how he managed to fuck it up with her. Granted, this was probably something I should talk to Aster about before speaking to her ex, but I couldn’t help myself. I wanted to know what kind of arrogant, self-serving excuse he was going to come up with.

“Seven months of dating, and all I got was A’s across the board.”

“Isn’t that the point of a tutor? You know, to teach?”

“Yeah, but once we were finished studying, I was hoping to get more. Isn’t that why you picked her? So you could have a little fun after your sessions.”

I looked over at Aster, and she was about ready to punch the lights out of one of her potential sorority sisters. I couldn’t blamer her. These people were boring as hell. “What are you talking about? I begged Aster to be my tutor because she’s the best one you can get in the school.”

“Then why are you dating her?”

“I’m not-” But then I had to stop myself because technically, that was why I was here. They think we’re together, and I couldn’t embarrass her anymore. “We’re seeing each other because I think she’s a cool girl. It has nothing to do with using her for anything. Getting good grades is the most important thing to me. If something else comes out of it, then that’s cool, too.”

He tutted. “I guess it’s easy to have that much confidence when you’re screwing your teacher. Oh, sorry, I meant tutor,” He snorted, laughing to himself. “The star quarterback falling in love with his plaid skirt loving tutor. Still sounds like the plot to a terrible porn movie, no matter how you slice it.”

“That’s enough,” Scotty stepped in. “I’m sorry, Tanner. Connor is clearly bitter because Aster, much like every female at Covey U, has no interest in him.”

Connor rolled his chin until he was looking directly at me. “Whatever. I’m just going to warn you, those short skirts are deceptive.” I narrowed my eyes and watched as Scotty walked away from this conversation, clearly as bored as I felt. I planned on following his lead in a couple of minutes, but first, I wanted to teach Connor a lesson. “The girl is frigid as an iceberg. She’s a cock tease of the highest order.”

“What the FUCK are you talking about?” Instinctively, I grabbed him by the collar and pushed him against the wall. It was only after the music stopped and I heard a few gasps that I realized I was drawing attention.

Brooks and Dash came up beside me, but they weren’t holding me back. In fact, it felt like they were goading me a little.
