“And how do you suggest we do that?”

“Let me kiss you.”

“Did I just hear you correctly? You want tokissme? Again?”

I rolled my eyes. “Don’t make it sound like a chore. Connor’s watching, too. In fact, they’re standing next to each other, watching us like we’re an attraction at the zoo. Let’s keep them talking.” I was goading her, mainly because I wanted to kiss her again, and I knew it was selfish, but damn it, I’d been staring at her lips for long enough. I wanted to feel them properly this time. None of that hard kissing to prove a point. I wanted to sell this.

“Fine,” she grumbled, as though she wasn’t happy about it, but her smile gave her away. She wasn’t angry about it either, or maybe somewhere in the deep recesses of her mind, she was as excited as me.

Aster drew her head back and looked down at my lips, then up to my eyes. “Are you going to do this, or what?”

“A little eager there, Teach.”

“I just want to get it over with.” She rolled her eyes, but tipped her chin up, no less. I could only assume I was thawing away at her icy exterior.

Her eyes tracked my every move as I dropped and placed my lips on hers. Surprisingly, she didn’t flinch. Maybe she was getting used to me. Her hand threaded through my hair, pulling a little. I wasn’t sure if she was trying to make it hurt, but it was definitely skirting the side of painful.

I didn’t let it deter me, though. I drew her body in, so she was flush with mine and deepened the kiss, letting my tongue skate across her lip. I didn’t expect her to open up, but I knew the move would be visible enough for our little show to be seen.

“So you didn’t answer my question,” I drawled as I pulled away from our kiss.

Her eyes were hooded, and I didn’t dare say it, but she looked a little pissed off. “You didn’t ask me anything.”

“Why do you want to be part of a group of people you hate?” She opened her mouth to no doubt deny the accusation, but I knew better. “Don’t tell me you don’t hate them. I know you do, and you’ve got reason to.” I looked around and could see there were groups of people standing and watching us. They were no doubt whispering about how I’d taken the sweet, virginal girl and ruined her. Funny, before kissing her, I never realized how much I wanted to do that. Did it make me just as bad as them? Or was I more concerned with making sure that everything about her was mine? Either way, I’d become somewhat possessive of my fake girlfriend / tutor, and it was no doubt going to get me into trouble. “They’re awful people.”

“Vapid and vacant, yes. But awful? That’s a little harsh, isn’t it?”

“Guessing you didn’t hear about all the things that went down at Southern Collegiate during the championship game?”

“Nope.”

“My friend Hayden went there before she transferred here. She was part of one of the sororities and some fucked up shit happened there.”

She raised her hand, pursing her lips together. “Nope. I don’t want to hear it. I get it. These people are terrible, but I need to do it.”

I raised my hands, drawing her in because I didn’t want to let her go just yet. She fell into my body, almost as if she didn’t want to let go either. I placed my hand on the small of her back, feeling the hard bone of her corseted bodice. It didn’t feel right. I wanted to feel her soft curves and run my hand down to her ass. Not that fake boyfriends get that privilege, but maybe, just maybe, I’d be able to take advantage of the setting.

“I think I was so taken aback when I saw you, I forgot to tell you how beautiful you looked tonight.”

She dropped her forehead onto my chest, refusing to give me eye contact. “Thanks,” She mumbled, and I hated I couldn’t see her reaction.

I dipped one of my hands between us and pulled her chin up, so she was looking at me. “Seriously, Aster. You’re not just the most beautiful woman here. You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

Her cheeks flushed, but I saw the tiniest of smiles draw across her lips. It was then that I realized this little thing I had about my tutor wasn’t just a crush that I’d get over once I wasn’t around her. This was a full-blown obsession. Was it normal to want to know everything about someone?

Then, I did something without asking because her eyes were pleading with me. Begging me to touch her. She was like a siren calling me home, and I wanted to get in the warmth.

I kissed her.

I placed my lips on hers and I thought that was it. She was going to finally admit she had the same crazy obsession with me.

But that was an arrogant mistake.

She froze. Her body was trying to get as far away from me as possible, and her lips didn’t respond. I could have sworn I heard a little yelp when her lips connected with mine, but I had to stay there for at least a minute because people were watching, and we needed this to be believable.

As I pulled away, she glanced around at the other guests. “Thanks,” She quipped. “I think we’ve really got them believing that we’re into each other.”

“Well, I’m glad it’s worked. Does that mean you’ll do some extra credit work for me?” I joked, but with her eyes wide, I think I fucked it up yet again. As if the kiss wasn’t enough of a distraction, I had to say that. Was I destined to screw this whole thing up?
