I pushed against him one more time, but it was no use. He wasn’t even moving. In fact, he was laughing at me. Then he circled his fingers around my wrists and brought them above my head and dipped down.

Tanner was mere inches away from me now. “Only the cute ones.”

He smiled.

I frowned.

Was he flirting?

I wasn’t sure, so I thought I’d respond with my usual sass.

“Poor, Adam. He must be pinned to the floor on a near daily basis, then.”

Tanner’s grin grew.

“Oh, you did not just call my teammate hot?”

“If that’s what you took out of it, that’s your own thoughts. He’s dating your friend, Hayden, right? Maybe you guys could form a nice little thruple,” I teased, because it was my only form of defense as I lay on the grass with him. “I think you guys would look cute together.”

“Really, Teach? That’s how it’s going to be?” He shifted, so he only needed one of my hands to hold both of my wrists above me. Bringing his free hand down to my middle, he started tickling me relentlessly.

“Tanner. No! I’m ticklish,” I squealed, squirming, but it was no use. His legs had trapped me in because he was essentially sitting on me now.

“That’s the whole point. This is payback.”

“For what?” It came out breathless and huffy, but I refused to be defeated by him. Still kicking my legs, I tried to get him off balance.

“For talking about how hot my roommate is.”

“Why is that such an issue for you?”

“Because the only person I want you to look at is me.”

Then everything stopped.

Silence ensnared us.

He was looking down at me, just as shocked as I was at him.

Did he just say that?

Did he just admit he liked me?

His body relaxed, freeing my legs even though they’d given up the fight a while ago. His lean torso slipped in between my thighs as he shifted his weight around.

I gulped.

Am I feeling what I think I’m feeling?

“Uh, is this okay?” Tanner asked. I hadn’t said anything since his last admittance. I had no idea what action to take next. I’d never been in a situation like this, but I knew I didn’t want to stop it.

“It’s fine,” I squeaked out. “I might quiz you on a few things while we’re here.” What else was I supposed to say? Still unable to move. I now had my legs spread wide open with Tanner comfortably resting in between. I knew I sounded ridiculous, but he didn’t seem to mind. He was just studying my face for what felt like the first time.

“Aster, you make it extremely difficult to concentrate on my workload in this position, let alone a pop quiz.” He smiled, his gaze flicking across my features, and I hoped the floodlights were drowning out the blush on my cheeks.

Licking my lips, I said, “Why’s that?”

“Don’t you already know?”
