“It’s for your own good, Teach.” The ride was bumpy and uncomfortable, but as I looked up, I could see the mess we’d made on the field.

“What about the balls?” The sprinklers turned on at the back end, drenching some of the balls left behind. I could feel some of the water splashing us, but it wasn’t clear in this position how much water was coming our way.

“Agh. They’re collateral damage. I’ll get them for you in the morning.”

When we were close to the stands, I expected him to put me down, but he didn’t. He just ran through the tunnel, the locker room, and the hallway. All the way through to the parking lot.

Finally, he dropped me next to his car, leaning me against the door. Still holding my arms, he looked me over. “You didn’t get too wet, did you?”

Not over the sprinklers, I thought, but kept that tidbit to myself because as much I wanted to blame the sprinklers for that damp patch in my panties, it had nothing to do with them, and everything to do with the guy standing in front of me.

The guy I hated until a few weeks ago.

“I’m fine.”

“Good.” He flicked his hair, and little sprinkles of water hit my face. A refreshing respite for my heated cheeks. With both hands now on either side of me, Tanner was encasing me in, again, and I didn’t mind it at all. “Sorry about back there.” He tipped his chin to the entrance of the field.

“No need to be sorry.”

“You sure? Because if you got caught up in the moment, I get it. I’m a big boy, and I have been coming on a little strong.”

“I would have told you if I didn’t want it.”

With a small smile on his face, he dropped down, pecking me on the cheek. “I guess I should get you back to your dorm.”

I couldn’t say I wasn’t disappointed. He kissed me on the cheek, and all I wanted was for him to finish where he left off.

“I suppose you’re right. They’ll probably start looking for me if I don’t show up in thirty minutes, anyway.”

“Would they?”

“I mean, I’m usually in my dorm by ten, the latest. So this time is concerning. If they found out I was hanging out with the best quarterback this school has seen in the last decade, it would be downright scandalous.”

He chuckled, dropping a kiss right under my ear now. “You’re too kind, but if anyone’s going to do it, I’m glad it’s me tainting your reputation, Teach.” His hand found mine, and he gave it a little squeeze before dropping his forehead to mine. “I really had a good time tonight,” he admitted, biting his bottom lip.

“Me too.” I waffled our fingers together.

“Maybe we could do it again sometime?”

“I’d like that.”

As he pulled away from me, he opened his back door, pulling out a gray Covey U sweatshirt, and handed it to me, but I didn’t take it. I just looked down at it with confusion. “Take it. Please. Your hair is wet enough that you’re shivering.”

“Okay.” As I put it on, I felt like I was drowning in a sea of Tanner. Sprinklers be damned. This was how I wanted to go.

He opened the door for me, and I stepped in, sad that this night was already ending.

I took my time as I strolled back into the dorm, watching Tanner drive away. My heart was racing, and I felt drunk with giddiness.

Did this night just happen? The whole evening felt like a dream, and something I’d never do. Make out on a football field? That just wasn’t me, but I was almost certain it was the best night of my life.

I pushed the door open and headed for the elevators. Once alone in there, I may have squealed a little more than necessary. I couldn’t help it. I’d been kissed before, but never the way Tanner kissed. He was passionate and fiery, and I couldn’t even think of all the words to describe it because my brain was still trying to get over the fact that it actually happened.

I kissed Tanner Joyce, and he asked to see me again. What planet was I living on?

“Why are you smiling like that?” Thea asked as I walked past her in the hallway. She was carrying a tub of ice cream and wearing a comfortable black bodysuit with a Georgia Community College sweatshirt on.

“Am I smiling?” I desperately tried to force the curves of my lips down, but it was no use. After my night with Tanner took an unexpected turn, I felt like I was walking on air.
