Maybe for her it was nothing, but it sure felt like something to me.

“So, what does he look like?”

My mind went straight to Tanner’s chiseled features, and I smiled, thinking about all the things that made him special. All the things that I used to hate about him. Now, I couldn’t stop thinking about them.

“He’s got this beautiful smile and these teal green eyes I could get lost in.”

“Oh, sounds like you’re in love,” Thea teased.

“That’s a little strong. Maybe I’m in like is better. Yeah, I like him.” A lot.

“What’s his name? Would I know him?”

“Are you into football?”

She stilled, her smile immediately dropping. “Is he a football player?” I nodded, and her entire body deflated.

“That’s why I was on the football field, and why I’ve got this.” I tugged on the sweatshirt for emphasis.

She lazily drew her gaze down to the gray sweatshirt, and I could feel the disappointment dripping from her features. What was wrong with a football player? “Yeah, I guess I just didn’t realize that was a football sweatshirt. I should have, though. My brother has a near identical one.”

“You know, I never thought I’d be so invested in a guy’s jaw line but his is so cut, it’s just…” I looked up at the sky. “Unreal.”

“It’s not Jackson James,is it?”

I shook my head. “I have no idea who that is.” Her demeanor immediately changed, and that was when I realized she must have developed a little crush since starting here. “His name is Tanner.”

The relief seemed short-lived, and Thea froze right back up. Her eye twitched, and it looked kind of like she was a broken robot for a second. “Tanner Joyce?”

“Yeah, do you know him?”

Slowly, she dropped her spoon in the ice cream tub and stood. “This is worse than when Emily told me she had a crush on him,” she muttered as she walked to my door.

“Everything alright?” I wasn’t sure what I’d done to have her react like this, but clearly, I’d pissed her off.

With her eyes closed, she started, “Aster, as much as I’m happy we’re friends. I don’t think I can talk to you about this anymore.”

“Okay.” She takes a deep breath, and I stand, worried that she was hyperventilating. “Is it because you like Tanner or something? Apparently, a lot of girls have been trying to get into his pants since he got here.”

She raised her hand, squealing out. “Please do not mention Tanner’s pants to me ever again. He’s mybrother, and hearing you talk about dry humping him on a field has left unimaginable scars on my psyche that only a trained professional with several years of experience will be able to heal.”

“Your brother?”

“Mytwinbrother.”

“Uhh.”

“Now, if you don’t mind. I’ve got to go and figure out ways I can bleach my brain. Oh God. I need to take a boiling hot shower. At least that will make me feel less disgusted with myself.”

Thea started rubbing at her arms, brushing off imaginary dirt.

“I’m, uh, sorry.”

“Don’t be.” She gives me a somewhat stilted smile. “But next time I see you. Do you mind never mentioning that you dry humped my brother again? Or mention anything else you do. It’s already going to take every ounce of my will to get that off my mind.”

“Sure,” I quipped before she trudged to the door, muttering angrily to herself.

“Goodnight, Aster.” She didn’t bother turning, and I was okay with that because I was also embarrassed.
