That was when I thought I’d have a little fun with her. I gently pushed her to the bookshelf and trapped her in with both of my hands. “It’s alright to have a few fantasies, Teach,” I whispered before kissing the column of her neck. “Wanna share?”

She let out a little breathy giggle and leaned her head back. “Oh, Tanner. I don’t think you could handle those fantasies.” She pushed me off, and her skirt was a little rumpled, as was her hair.

“Fine. I’ll get them out of you eventually, but the first thing I want to get out of you is a date. I’ll pick you up at seven tonight.” I said as I slowly walked backwards. “Oh, and do me a favor. Don’t tell my sister about it, okay? She hasn’t stopped blowing up my phone since she found out I’m interested in you, and I’d rather not have to explain any more of our activities.” I wiggled my eyebrows and before she could hit me with a book, I ran out of there.

As we pulled up to the spot, confusion marred Aster’s perfect face. All dressed up, I didn’t think she’d expect us to stop here. “Did you want to get a coffee or something? Is that why we’re stopping here?”

“Nope.” I turned the engine off and looked at her.

“Then why are we here?”

“Because of all the places I thought about taking you on our first date, this was the only one that I thought would really impress you.”

“Really?” She frowned, and for a split second, I was doubting my decision even though I was pretty darn hyped about the choice earlier.

“Yeah. I mean, I thought about taking you to the carnival at Covey Shore, but then I knew you didn’t like a lot of people around, so that was out. Another idea was a dinner at a fancy restaurant, but I know that’s not you.”

She arched her brow in question. “You don’t think I look like a fancy restaurant kind of girl?”

“Pfft. Please. I know you’re not, and I’ll be honest. I have no idea how you manage to look as good as you do on a diet of gummy bears and nachos.”

“It’s all in my gains.” She rubbed her belly flagrantly.

“Do you know what that means?”

“Nope,” she popped out arrogantly. Well, at least there was one thing in this world I knew about, and she didn’t.

“You’re proving my point. I knew none of those things would impress you. So I decided to take you somewhere different.”

“And you thought that somewhere different was a bookstore? Where I’d have to pay for the books?” She replied, sounding wholly unimpressed, but she had no idea what was in store for her.

“You aren’t paying for anything, Teach. You are going to find the books you love, and I’m going to watch while trying not to look like a stalker.”

Narrowing her eyes, she pushed an errant hair behind her ear. “I’ve got to be honest. This all still feels a little last minute.”

That immediately made my stomach drop. Was it really that bad an idea? I thought it was pretty good. “Believe me, this wasn’t a last-minute thing. I’ve been thinking about where I’d want to take you on a date for a while.”

She rolled her eyes in disbelief. “Yeah, right.”

“You really don’t see it, do you?”

“See what?”

That I’m crazy about you.

“I've liked you for a long time, Aster.” I figured diluting the intensity of my statement might work. If she’d never been on a date before, I didn’t want to freak her out by coming on too strong.

She looked down, and I took my hand in hers, dragging it over to my side of the console. “Everything okay?” I rubbed my thumb across the back of her hand in an attempt to reassure her, but I wasn’t sure it was doing much.

“Everything’s good. I guess I just assumed you didn’t like me, let alone wanted to date me. It still feels like a foreign concept that we aren’t pretending right now.”

I bit my lip, letting out a small groan. “Yeah, about that. I have a confession to make. I don’t think I was ever pretending.” She glared at me with disbelief, and I chuckled. “Can’t help it. The minute I saw you, I knew I liked you. I guess I just thought you’d never be interested in a guy like me.”

“That’s not true. You practically chased me out of the library when I first met you.”

“That was when I thought you were something different. When I got to know you, and realized how incredible you were, I knew it was stupid to ever think you’d like me.”

“Why?”
