I hesitated, because I knew she wouldn’t like the answer. “I’m not exactly smart. I won’t be able to hold a conversation with you about anything meaningful. Unless you’re interested in talking about football.”

She whacked me on the shoulder, eyeing me with annoyance. “Tanner. Don’t say things like that. Youaresmart. It’s just a different smart to me. I’ve studied the mechanics of the human body each year I’ve been here, but there’s no way I’d be able to figure out how to put the mechanics of using my body to throw a ball as far as you.”

I pulled back from smirking too wildly. “But have you been able to figure out the mechanics of using your body in other contexts?” I teased, gently nudging her on the shoulder. She giggled lightly. “But in all seriousness, you’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever had the luxury of looking at, and I still can’t figure out why you’re interested in me, but I’m going to keep entertaining the idea until you’ve come to your senses.”

“Is this how you always get the girls? Peppering them with unbelievable compliments?”

I shook my head. “Nope. Only you, because I’ve concluded that you’re oblivious to how hot you are.”

She was about to roll her eyes again, I could tell, and I made a vow to myself then and there that next time she did that, it would be while I’m giving her the best climax of her life. So, to stop her, I leaned over the middle console and kissed her.

She wasn’t expecting it. Her balk at the move was enough to tell me that, but when she realized I wasn’t going in for just a quick peck to shut her up, she melded into my touch, allowing me to take control.

I cupped her cheek and rubbed my thumb against her soft skin, feeling her breathing skitter ever so slightly. As I pulled away from her with her eyes closed, she drawled out, “Thanks.” Instantly cringing, she dropped her head, shaking it in embarrassment. “Oh, no. who says thank you after a kiss?”

I laughed, letting her embarrassment roll off me because it was cute. “If anything, I should be the one thanking you.”

She let out a scant breath and smiled, not wanting to dwell on my proclamation. Slapping her hands on her thighs, she said, “So, are we going to start this date, or are we going to sit in the parking lot all night?”

I raised a brow, hiding my amusement because I could tell she was nervous by the way she was fiddling with her skirt. Funny. I never really imagined her as a nervous person. She seemed like such a badass, but who knew going on a date with me would make her so jittery?

“Stay there.”

She complied, watching me as I walked around the car, only to open it and hold my hand out for her.

“What a gentleman.” It was dripping with sarcasm, but I liked how she was always willing to bust my balls, even though we both knew how much she liked me, too.

“Only for now.” I flicked my gaze down to her flowing black skirt, biting my bottom lip. “Because, damn, that skirt might turn me into a heathen by the end of the night.”

She bumped her shoulder into my chest as she stepped out of the door in a teasing gesture.

When I shut the car, she said, “Is that your way of telling me you’re a little like Jekyll and Hyde?”

Looking at her blankly, I admitted, “Am I supposed to know who that is?”

She rolled her eyes and grunted, pushing me against the car. I couldn’t help but reach out and grab her, forcing her to lean her body against mine, and as she glanced up, I gave her another kiss on the lips. Short and sweet because it felt like we were stalling getting this date started.

“Considering one of your classes is English Literature, you should know the story of Jekyll and Hyde.”

Threading my hands in hers, I lead her to the entrance of the bookstore, and teased, “Good thing you’re here, then. I’ve got you to answer my every need.”

“Stop it.” She slapped me on the arm, lightly giggling. “You make it sound like I'm your slave.”

I shrugged, feeling somewhat amused. “Hey, if that’s what you’re into. I’m down with that.”

As the doors slid open, I could see her awe of the four-story store with every crevice housing a book.

“This is awesome.” Aster’s eyes were wide, and she took in this tiny little breath, which annoyingly made my mind wander places it shouldn’t. Like how Aster might sound when she was on the precipice of pleasure.

“How did you know I’ve never been here?”

“I didn’t. I clearly just struck lucky.”

“Seems to be how you operate.”

“Striking lucky? I can only wish. Now, if you want to have a look at books, I’m going to get us a couple of coffees and sit right over there.” I pointed to the little coffee table hidden between the shelves with a ‘RESERVED’ sign resting on it.

“Seriously?”
