“Yes, but in my opinion, I think it’s a lot better. See, I already know that his mother is dying, and he’s in love with his next-door neighbor. I can’t wait to see how this plays out.”

He sat silently, reading the blurb before looking back at me. “Why do you like reading so much?” It was a genuine question, sparked out of interest, and it was also one I’d never answered before.

“Why do you like Football?”

“Because it gets me out of my head. There’s only one focus for four quarters and I love the feeling of winning.”

Warmth spreads through my chest as I see him talking about the sport he so clearly loves. “Well, it’s the same thing for me. Granted, it’s nowhere near as physical, but it gets me out of my head into a world that I imagine. The best feeling in the world for me is being so engrossed in a book that I forget the time of day, or anything else that’s going on in my life.”

Tanner’s lips curve at the ends. “I get it. I feel the same way.”

Our faces are mere inches apart now, and the tension is building in the room. I want to kiss him, and judging by the look in his eyes, he wants to as well, but what was he waiting for?

I leaned in a little closer, tipping my mouth close to his, and I didn’t have to wait long for Tanner to take the hint. He leaned in and unexpectedly kissed my cheek at the corner of my lips. Then, as his lips were trailing light kisses across my face until he got to my ear, his hand grazed the top of my knee. “Did I thank you for letting me take you on a date yet?”

“Mhmm,” I hummed, holding back my giggle because it felt so good. “You've thanked me so many times, it’s kind of sounding a little desperate.”

He huffed out a laugh before nipping at my earlobe. I drew in a sharp breath, my toes tipping off the floor because that was more than I was expecting.

“Believe me, Aster. You make me feel desperate.”

I turned my face to him and kissed him on the lips, threading my hands through his hair.

Tanner was a gentle and tentative kisser, and his mouth moved against mine slowly, giving me time to savor the moment. Excitement bloomed through my body and manifested itself through my knee lifting, trying to get some respite. It didn’t work. My body was heating up and it was because Tanner’s kisses were everything.

Since Tanner’s hand was on my knee, he squeezed it, and lifted my leg so my thigh was draped over both of his.

Half straddling him, we kissed for a little longer, but it wasn’t enough. My body was burning inside. My mind kept flashing back to the field, and how much I wanted to ride his crotch again.

I couldn’t believe I just thought that. But then again, I could, because Tanner had lit something inside me that no one else has ever been able to. He was the fire, and I was the match.

Half sitting on him wasn’t enough, so I finished the job. Without breaking our kiss, I shifted all the way over, so my ass was sitting firmly on his thick thighs.

He groaned into the kiss as I moved across his lap to get comfortable. There was a moment I paused, because I could feel him.

All of him.

Pulling on his hair, I drew his head back, kissing him fervently because in this position, I was the one who had all the control. With his hands on my hips, he let me take the lead, and I explored him the way I’d always wanted to. Kissing and nipping at his lips, I couldn’t help myself. I ground into his crotch, enjoying the feeling of his hardness rubbing against my center. It wasn’t as easy to feel this time since he was wearing jeans instead of those gray sweatpants, but it was enough that I didn’t want it to stop.

“Is this okay?” With a squeeze of my hips, his eyes bored into mine, and I adjusted myself on his lap, suddenly feeling a little self-conscious.

“Yeah? Why wouldn't it be?”

His gaze drifted down to my lips and then up to my eyes. I could see he had a question on the tip of his tongue, but whatever it was, he didn't want to come out and ask it.

“Come on. What's wrong?” Still grinding lightly against him, I was taking everything I wanted.

“I just want you to know that we can stop anytime. There's no pressure at all from me. I'm happy to be the lucky person who gets to make out with you.”

“What are you talking about?”

He closed his eyes, and then he cursed. “I knew I should have just gone along with it, but I didn't want you regretting anything.”

“Tanner, I know you think I'm the smartest person in the world, but even I can't decipher your gibberish.” I offered him a smile, trying to ease the tension that his odd behavior suddenly created.

“Do you remember that sorority party that we went to the first time?”

“You mean the one where you kissed me like your life depended on it?”
