“No, you weren’t. You were attacking the people who are only here to help us have a life together.”

“Dillon, they’re treating me like I don’t know what I’m doing.”

Dillon shook his head with sadness in his eyes. “Remy, they’re treating you like they don’t know what they’re doing. And they don’t. The most Cali’s ever done is help you rescue Hil when Armand kidnapped him. And until now, Jimmy has only done desk work. You have to keep that in mind when you talk to them.”

“Yeah, but…”

“No “buts”. I know you and Lucien have had a life full of this stuff. But no one else here has. You have to take that into account. We’re all scared shitless that something will go wrong. Armand’s already shot Cali once. We know what he’s capable of. Help us have your confidence in the plan,” Dillon pleaded with his soft brown eyes wide.

Staring down at the man I loved, I realized that I had a problem. For the rest of our lives together, I would never be able to say no to him. He had me wrapped around his little finger.

“You’re right. I’ll do what I can. Are we good?” I asked affectionately squeezing his shoulders.

“Always,” he replied looking up with a twinkle in his eyes.

Kissing him under the street lights, I remembered how lucky I was to have a man like Dillon by my side. He was everything I wasn’t. He helped me be the person I always wished I was.

Heading back into the center and the office, I addressed everyone.

“Okay, we’ll go over this again. And we’ll keep going over it until everyone here is comfortable with what they have to do,” I said looking back at Dillon.

The smile he gave me in reply melted my heart.

“Tomorrow I’ll suggest to Eris that she and I spend the night at Armand’s place so we don’t have to deal with Saturday afternoon traffic into Long Island. Knowing her father won’t be there, she’ll have no reason not to agree. Once there, and I’m sure Eris is asleep, I’ll use this handy toy,” I said holding up the glorified stud detector that Jimmy supplied from the FBI.

“With it, I’ll search the walls of Armand’s bedroom and office for his metal safe which this should detect easily. Once I’ve found it, I’ll crack it.”

“But, the ledgers won’t be in it yet,” Jimmy pointed out.

“The house will also not be swarming with security. That way, if it takes me a little longer to figure out the combination, no problem.”

“Right,” Jimmy agreed.

“And once I have it, I head to bed. In the morning, I have breakfast with Eris and I wait for the catering to arrive.”

“That’s when I get there,” Dillon interjected.

“Yes. Because if Armand’s security team is worth their salt, before anyone arrives, they are going to do a bug sweep. They can’t do it once catering and the planners start setting everything up. It will be too busy. Which means you, Dillon, can get there as part of the party planner crew and plant the bugs and repeaters we’ll need to communicate with Jimmy’s van which will be parked a quarter mile away.”

“I’m still not comfortable with not being able to come in and help you if something goes wrong,” Jimmy added.

“What could you do? Run in guns blazing? You’d shot dead as soon as you stepped onto the lawn and Armand would get off with a slap on the wrist for defending his property.”

Jimmy’s jaw clenched.

I looked back at Dillon hearing his voice in my head. He didn’t have to say anything to get me to approach Jimmy with a hand on his shoulder.

“Look, we’re gonna be okay. As long as everyone does what they supposed to, we’ll all be in and out before Armand knows anything’s missing. After that, your people will examine the ledger to determine its legitimacy. Once that’s done, Armand gets arrested and the FBI convinces him not to retaliate on any of us,” I said clenching my jaw in doubt.

“I told you, this isn’t the FBI’s first mafia boss. We know what we’re doing. He won’t be stupid enough to come after you once we’re done with him.”

“I hope so,” I replied still not trusting him.

Repeating the details of the plan until everyone was comfortable with it, I said good night and left with Lucien.

“You know, he’s good for you,” Lucien said as we drove back to my place.

“Dillon?”
