Eris couldn’t be more pleased with herself.

“Should we compare what we’ve brought?” I asked.

“Now?”

“Why not?”

“Okay, let’s go,” she said happily.

“Lead the way,” I said prompting her to get up.

When she had turned facing the other way, I looked back a Dillon. I was worried for him. What if Eris had mentioned him to Armand and Armand arrived early knowing what Dillon looked like?

Putting him in this type of danger was a mistake. Nothing was worth risking his safety, but there wasn’t anything I could do about it now.

Eris’s parade of dress options seemed endless. That was good because it kept her in our room where she was sure not to spot Dillon. But, seriously, how many dresses could one woman own?

When I couldn’t take anymore and I was sure Dillon was safely gone, I suggested what we should wear and brought the nightmare to an end.

“Okay, give me some time to get dressed.”

“I thought you were dressed,” I said sincerely.

Eris looked at me like I was a naïve child. “It’s our engagement party. I need to put my face on silly.”

“Right. Well, I’ll see you out there.”

“Not if I see you first,” she said as she disappeared into the bathroom.

Getting dressed and running my fingers through my hair, I took a quick look in the mirror and left the room. I was feeling confident. Heading downstairs about to check in with the kitchen, I saw two things I didn’t want to.

Through the open front door, I saw Armand pull up. And through the glass door leading to the back patio, I saw Dillon desperately trying to get my attention. When he had it, he beckoned me outside.

“You’re supposed to be gone by now,” I told him pulling him to a secluded section of the backyard.

“I know. I know,” Dillon said panicked.

“Okay, Dillon, calm down. Tell me what’s going on.”

“It’s the equipment. It’s not working. I did everything Jimmy told me to do when I planted them, but he’s not getting a signal.”

“Fuck!” I muttered trying to figure out what to do.

My heart was thumping. Jimmy’s recording was our back up plan. If everything went to hell, he would hear and call in the cavalry, whatever good that would do. It was also a second option in case I couldn’t get a hold of the ledgers. I was supposed to pull Armand to where I knew a bug was planted and discuss business. Without the recording, not only did we have one shot at this, but if anything went wrong, we were on our own.

“Jimmy thinks Armand’s men put in something that can scramble a radio signal.”

“I’ve never even heard of such a thing,” I told him.

“Neither had I. But Jimmy says they exist. Who’s that?”

“Who?” I asked lost in thought.

“Up there?”

I turned to Dillon and followed his gaze. Looking behind me I saw a face in the second floor window. The person was staring down at us until they quickly pulled away. Counting the windows, I knew exactly who it was.

“Shit!”
