“He’s not there anymore,” I reassured him.

“How do you know?”

“Because the reason I can now remember confronting him is because something happened to me the last time I did.”

“What happened to you?” Remy turned to me concerned.

“I don’t know. Something awakened, maybe? All I do know is that I don’t think I’m human,” I said vulnerably.

Remy stared at me with his brow furrowed. It didn’t look like he believed me. But then he started leaning towards me. I wasn’t sure what he was doing. He didn’t stop until he was inches away. Hovering over me, he sniffed. He was using his wolf. It was like the two had become one.

“You smell human,” he told me not moving.

I knew what I had to do to convince him. More accurately, there was something in me that knew what to do. So, closing my eyes, I relaxed and allowed what was in me to take over.

As if my eyes were open, I could suddenly see everything around me. But this time, it was Remy who was an image made of light while his wolf was real. I looked into the eyes of the beautiful beast as it stared back at me. We saw each other and in his presence, I felt safer than I ever had.

Turning my attention to the building, I showed his wolf what I saw. I couldn’t tell you how I did it. I just could. And when the wolf saw the sidewalk leading to the building turned into ash-covered concrete, the wolf jerked back startled.

Remy’s wolf didn’t like what it saw. It made him anxious. That made me anxious too. And losing hold of my relaxed state, I snapped back into my human mind and was again surrounded by darkness.

Slowly opening my eyes, I again found Remy. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking but he looked disturbed.

“You did something to me,” Remy declared. “I can’t tell what it is.”

“I showed your wolf what I see.”

“Yes. It was something about darkness and destruction.”

“I guess you can say that. I think what I showed it was vampire tracks. They burn whatever they touch. At least this one did.”

“And you said this started when you confronted the man you thought was your father?”

“Yeah. After compelling me to leave and me resisting, he pushed me against a wall. That was when it kicked in. And that’s when I saw that he wasn’t my father. He had compelled my mother to believe she was pregnant. And then one day, I appeared.”

“You’re a changeling,” Remy said startled.

“Changeling? What’s that?”

Remy steadied himself.

“My father told me stories about the way things were before the wolves took over New York City. It was run by vampires. My father’s alpha was the one to initiate the war with them. He united the packs and a lot of blood was shed. In the end, the wolves won.

“But as my father’s pack cleared out the last of their dens, they began to believe that the vampires weren’t working alone.”

“Who were they working with?” I asked hoping for answers to my origins.

“The wolves believed it was demons.”

“Demons? Are you telling me that demons exist?”

“No wolf has ever seen one. But one of the wolves present said he had a vision and that was what he saw.”

I leaned back slowly wrapping my head around the idea that I could be a demon.

“What the hell am I?” I asked feeling an overwhelming weight on my chest.

“Not that,” Remy quickly replied.
