“But you work with Remy?” Hil asked trying to piece things together.

“Yeah.”

Hil looked at me with pain in his eyes. “Leave it to my brother to figure out how to use someone without having to talk to them. I’m sorry about that, Dillon. Anyway, you know what he is now.”

“I do.”

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, right?”

“And he’s making me the strongest person ever,” I agreed with a forced smile.

“Oh, Dillon,” he said reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. “Anyway, let me pay for this so we can check out what you’ve been working so hard on.”

“Not necessary. I’ve already paid for it,” I said proudly.

Hil looked concerned. “Dillon! You know you didn’t have to do that?”

“I know. I wanted to. I’m making money now. And if I’m ever gonna get over my hang-ups, I need to be the one doing the treating for a change. Allow me to do this for you.”

Hil still looked hesitant.

“Please. I need this.”

Hil finally smiled and conceded. “Of course. Thank you,” he said looking at me in a new light.

Months later, with the opening of the renovated outreach center a day away, I found myself working late in what used to be Remy’s office. Alone and immersed in my thoughts, I was surprised by the sound of the door creaking open.

Rounding the desk, I froze in disbelief. Remy was walking towards me staring into my eyes. I was stunned into silence. With him an arm’s length away, a tsunami of emotions crashed over me.

When I could again speak, my words were flat. “I’m mad at you.”

“Really? I can’t imagine why. Your new station in life agrees with you,” Remy retorted, his eyes drifting to my attire.

Blushing slightly, I glanced down at my expensive outfit and then glared back at him. “Do you think I care about this?”

“I do. Yes. At least a little,” he admitted.

I wanted to deny it. But deep down I knew he was right.

“Are you expecting me to fall all over you with gratitude for what you’ve done?” I asked tensely.

“I’m not gonna lie, I was kind of hoping,” Remy replied, his charm slowly returning.

I stepped towards him. “Well, I’m not. I’m mad at you.”

“Okay, let’s hear it. What did I do?”

I frowned. “Don’t treat me like my feelings don’t matter.”

“I’m not doing that. I know they do. And, I’m sorry.”

“You left me. You made me think that something was developing between us and then you ghosted me… for months. You broke my heart.”

Remy paused as pain washed over him. “I did do that. Would you forgive me if I told you that there was a very good reason?”

“Because you had to plan your wedding?” I spit.

Remy looked away to pull my dagger from his heart. “I guess I did.”
