“Okay,” I said, following him across the street to his sleek car.

Getting in, he asked, “Are you ready for this?”

“I guess,” I said, trying to hide my disappointment.

Remy reached across my lap and popped open the glove compartment. Staring in as he did, it was empty.

“Oh shit!” he exclaimed with his eyes closed. “I left it on the counter. I can’t believe I forgot it. I’m so sorry,” Remy said sincerely. “Would you mind terribly if we picked it up? If you don’t feel comfortable going back to my place, I could bring it to you tomorrow.”

Remy wasn’t joking. He was serious. After all his talk about celebrating, this was all he had come up with. If I had known, I would have done something with Hil. How many times would Remy have to disappoint me before I learned?

“I mean, we can get it now,” I said, no longer hiding my disappointment.

“We don’t have to,” he said, seeing the look on my face.

“No, I have nothing else planned,” I said pointedly.

“Great,” he said with a gentle smile. “I promise you it will be worth it.”

“This better be one amazing-tasting candy bar,” I muttered, no longer looking at him.

“It will be,” he said, starting up his car and pulling off.

As we drove, I stared out the passenger window, lost in thought. How had I allowed myself to fall for him again? He was nothing but heartbreak. It was my own fault. I truly was pathetic.

“We’re here,” Remy said, snapping me out of my trance.

Looking up, we weren’t at his place. We were at the airport. But not LaGuardia or JFK, one for private planes. The car was parked 30 feet from a jet.

“What’s going on?” I asked, confused.

Remy looked at me, equally confused. “Oh! You thought I meant my place in New York. No.” That was when he dropped his first hint of a smile. “Are you still okay to go?”

I didn’t know what to think. “I…”

“Just yes, or no,” he said, looking deep into my eyes.

“Yes.”

The word was out before I could even think about it.

“Good,” he said, getting out of the car and handing its keys to an attendant.

Stopping to offer me his hand at the bottom of the stairs, I looked up at the plane. It wasn’t small.

“Remy, what’s going on?”

“We’re going to get that candy bar. You told me you didn’t want me to do anything fancy. So I’m keeping it simple,” he said, no longer hiding his devilish smirk.

Warmth filled me realizing that Remy was who I thought he was. Smiling, I took his hand and ascended the steps. Inside was a luxurious cabin decorated with sleek beige leather seats and ambient lighting. Despite its size, it felt intimate and cozy. As I settled into one of the plush chairs, Remy whispered into my ear.

“Get comfortable.”

“I suppose you’re not going to tell me where we’re going,” I asked him as he buckled up in the chair across the aisle from mine.

“To get the candy bar,” he replied, annoyingly proud of himself.

Once we were in the air, I looked down. We were quickly surrounded by water. I didn’t know what to think. Luckily, I didn’t have much time to. With the plane leveled off, a flight attendant set up a table in front of me. Once it was stable, Remy took the chair on the other side of it.
