With her words cutting me to shreds, I couldn’t look as she exited. Waiting to hear the main door open and close, I found myself bound within the chains created by thinking I could for once have what I wanted.

The silence between Dillon and me drew out. I was too ashamed to look at him.

“It’s not your fault, Remy,” Dillon’s soft voice said.

“It’s all my fault,” I countered.

“How? Tell me how any of this is your fault,” Dillon insisted.

I looked at him wondering how this could even be a question.

“I could have done more.”

“Of what?”

“I don’t know. More.”

“Remy, you didn’t ask to be born to the man you were, just like I didn’t. We’re both children of fate.”

Was that true? Could that be why I had felt like I had known him back when all I knew was his name?

Dillon’s mouth opened as if making a final request. “Please lie with me. If we only have an hour left to be together, let me spend it in your arms,” he said breaking my heart.

I stared at him from the floor. “I don’t want it to end like this. I won’t let it.”

“Then, I will. I’ll end it. Not because I’m scared of what her father would do to me. But because I’m scared of what he would do to you… and Hil, and your mother. I can’t be the cause of you all getting hurt. I can’t,” he said with tears in his eyes.

“I wouldn’t let it…”

“Please,” he said cutting me off. “Just lie with me. Let’s finish making this the perfect night,” he said wiping his face with the back of his hand.

Without another word, I got up and crawled back into bed. Pulling his naked body into my arms, he fit perfectly. With his arms balled in front of him, my wings covered him making the two of us one.

As the hour passed, we didn’t speak. When our time was done, he graciously pulled away and looked for his clothes. To my surprise, he seemed accepting of everything.

“You said you understand everything. Was it because you saw it?”

“In part,” he admitted.

“Could you tell me how she knew I was here?”

“The watch,” he said with sadness. “I saw her pay to put a tracker in it.”

“That fucking bitch,” I said rushing to my feet, yanking it off, and smashing it with a marble orb which until that moment had served no purpose.

“You just destroyed two million dollars?”

“So, it was real,” I asked Dillon.

“Yep,” Dillon confirmed. “And she paid almost as much to put the tracker in it.”

“Well, I don’t give two shits.”

“Okay,” he said staring at me fully dressed. “So, I guess this is it?”

“Is it ever “it” between the two of us?” I asked with a smile.

“Yes. Because this time it isn’t you saying it, it’s me,” he said fighting for courage. “It’s over. I never want to see you again. Never,” he said softly breaking my heart.
