“And you’re sure about that?”

“I’d bet my life on it.”

“And you’re going to,” Lucien reminded me. “You’re betting your life on all of them.”

“My life has never been in better hands,” I said turning to him with a smile.

“Must be nice,” Lucien said turning his gaze to the windshield.

“It is,” I told him before we both fell into silence.

The next day after convincing Eris that we should stay at the beach house the following night. I checked in with the team one more time before I left.

“You can do this, Dillon. You all can,” I told him over the phone as I drove to pick up Eris.

“This is it, isn’t it? Either we pull this off or…”

“There’s no “or”. We’re going to do this. And once it’s done, we’ll be together.”

“I love you, Remy. I need you to know that.”

“I love you too, Dillon. I’ve always loved you and I always will,” I told him knowing it was true.

Pulling up to Eris’s place I knew the game had begun.

“Hello,” she said going in for a kiss.

My instinct was to turn away but I didn’t. I let her kiss my lips. Everything had to go perfectly tonight. We couldn’t get into a fight. That meant doing more than I was comfort with.

“We’re going for the weekend,” I reminded her as I stared at the two suitcases she needed me to carry down three flights of stairs.

“That’s why I packed light,” she said without a hint of irony.

With the car loaded and us on our way, I again went over the plan in my head. There couldn’t be any mistakes. There was no margin for error.

I wasn’t sure what Armand would do if he caught us, but he wouldn’t just let it go. He would make an example of someone. And if he was anything like my father, the example would suffer.

Having second thoughts as I pulled into Armand’s driveway, my resolve returned when Eris exited the car without a thought to her stuff. She expected me to bring it in for her, which I would. But could I stand to play the role of thankless husband to a spoilt rich girl for the rest of my life? Not when I had Dillon waiting for me.

“I’ll put them over here,” I said depositing her suitcases outside our closet.

“If that’s what you want,” she said posing seductively on the bed we would share.

I looked at her knowing what was soon to follow. I had avoided having sex with her so far, but my excuses were wearing thin.

“Did you say that the chef left dinner for us?”

“Yes. She said that all we needed was to warm it up,” she said wiggling her chest and lightly biting her finger.

“Well, I’m starved. Did you want me to warm you up some, too?”

“Ahh. Fine!” She said giving up and flopping onto the bed.

Leaving her, I headed downstairs to the kitchen and went to work. I knew what the chef had prepared for Eris because it was the same thing she ate every night, a kale salad topped with a grilled chicken breast and mixed fruit for desert.

Opening the fridge, that was what I found. Retrieving the items and placing them on the kitchen island, I looked behind me and pulled a vile from my pocket. Pouring the contents over the fruit in both bowls, I quickly mixed the concoction and returned the empty vile to my pocket.

“What did the chef make us?” Eris said entering the kitchen behind me.
