“You could meet someone who actually gives a shit about you. And you could have the life you so desperately want. You could be happy.

“Think about it. What would being happy for the first time in your life feel like? Tell me, Eris, what would it feel like?”

Eris looked at me in silence. The moment drew out long enough that I thought all was lost.

“It would feel good,” she finally said allowing my wolf to relax.

“Then, return to the party. Let me take this. And allow me to give Armand the justice he deserves.”

“You can’t,” she said causing my heart to sink.

“I know my father’s an awful person. I know he deserves everything you want to give him. But, he’s still my father.”

“Your father who is treating you like cattle.”

“Being with you wouldn’t have been a curse.”

“But I love someone else, Eris. I love them with all of my heart. And I could never love you,” I said gently.

Eris lowered her head.

“But, you can find someone whowilllove you. It just isn’t me.”

“My father would kill your friend if you knew what he was,” she said bringing my wolf back to the surface.

“But you’re not going to tell him, about us, are you?” I said suddenly feeling the need to shift.

“I wouldn’t have to. He’s starting a war with the fae. He wants them all dead. His alpha won the war with the vampires and…”

“He wants his own war. That’s why he was so quick to accept my offer. He’s been trying to consolidate the city’s packs under him.”

“I guess.”

“Which is an even better reason to put him away. Eris, if Armand gets his war, the streets will be covered in as much wolf blood as fae.”

“I believe you. But you still can’t put my father in jail. You can do whatever you need to to put an end to the two of us and stop his war. But, if you put my father in prison, I would be left with nothing. I couldn’t survive that,” she said vulnerably.

“You just told me that a lot of people will die if I don’t do this. This can’t just be about you.”

“Yeah, but you’re smart,” Eris admitted. “It’s one of the reasons my father admires you. You could figure out a way to get our freedom and prevent the war without putting him in jail.”

“Eris…” I said sympathetically.

“Please, Remy. I know you can do it,” she said sincerely.

I stared into Eris’s big, sad eyes. I wanted to destroy Armand for what he had threatened to do to the people I cared about. But here was something I didn’t consider, what would uprooting his thick, deep roots do to the ground left behind?

“I need you to trust me,” I told her coming up with a new plan.

“And, how can I do that? You’ve betrayed me at every turn.”

“What I did was fight for the man I love. Step out from in between us, and allow me to be your friend.”

Eris stared at me blankly.

“Eris, one way or another, I’m going to leave here with these ledgers.”

“Because you’ll do anything for the people you love?”
