“Do we have a deal or not?”

“We do.”

“And you’re gonna let Eris marry who she wants?”

“Only as much as any other father,” he said looking at me with a smirk.

“Fair enough,” I said knowing I had the best deal I could get.

“Now you tell me, will you join me in the coming war?”

“Armand, it is my firm hope that I never see you again,” I told him before turning my back to him and walking off.

Exiting Armand’s bedroom, I met Eris in the hallway.

“You’re free,” I told her.

“I heard,” she said heartbroken.

Remembering what Armand said about her, I touched her cheek. “I’m sorry.”

“Just go,” she told me. I obliged.

Walking back to the car, I thought of Dillon. He had opened my eyes just like in Armand’s prophecy. It had said, when the fae have birthed their eyes, they will see through all that can stop them and rule the world. Wasn’t Dillon a changeling who had been left by the fae waiting for his powers to emerge? Couldn’t Dillon see through a vampire’s glamour? Couldn’t he see a shifter’s wolf?

Dillon’s awakening was the birth the fae had prophesized. He was the key to the fae taking over the world. At least they believed he was. And the only thing standing between the wolves, the fae, and Dillon, was me. I would have to protect him. Only I could keep him safe and my wolf and I were ready.

Chapter 14

Dillon

My leg bounced anxiously as I sat on the worn couch in my New Jersey apartment. Staring at my phone, it didn’t ring. It had been hours since I’d fled the beach house at Remy’s insistence, and I hadn’t heard a word from him since.

Waiting for his call, a thousand nightmare scenarios raced through my mind. Had something else gone wrong with the plan? Had Armand discovered what we were up to? Was Remy hurt? Was he dead?

When my phone rang breaking the silence, I nearly jumped out of my skin. The deafening noise bounced off the empty walls. Scrambling to pick it up, my hands shook.

“Hello?” I answered tentatively.

“Dillon, it’s me,” Remy said in a tone that instantly soothed my frayed nerves.

“Remy!” I cried. “You’re okay! I’ve been worried sick. I didn’t know what happened or—”

“It’s alright,” he said calming me. “Where are you? I need to see you.”

“Is it safe to talk? How would I know if someone was forcing you to say this?”

Remy was silent for a moment.

“Remember that time when you were staying at my family’s apartment and I walked in on you dancing naked with a hardon?”

Heat rushed to my face as fast as a nudist reaching for his zipper.

“I didn’t have a hardon?” I protested wishing it weren’t true.

“Okay. Whatever. Tell me where you are. I need to see you.”

“I’m back at my place in New Jersey.”
