CHAPTER ONE

Part One: Breaking and Entering…

Express One Financial was a small bank with about three tellers and one entrance leading in and out. Security cameras were mounted near the front door, at the teller counter, and over the vault. They rarely had high-traffic times from what I could see, and when they did, most of their customers were elderly.

This was my second time in the bank though, so I could have been wrong. There wasn’t a high chance of me being wrong but it was always possible. I took my phone out and snapped pictures of the camera locations while pretending to search for more bars.

“Um, can I help you?” I looked up to see a new teller that wasn’t at work yesterday. She was young. Maybe twenty-one or twenty-two. Definitely around my age.

I flashed her a smile and approached the counter. It would let me get a better look at the setup. I knew there was a panic button but I didn’t know if each teller had their own or if there was one button in a central location under the counter.

“Y’all got free wi-fi?” I asked, scratching the back of my head. She stared at me for a while before rolling her almond-shaped, whiskey eyes. She was already a pain in my fucking ass. She had too much attitude and she didn’t fit in with the other older women who worked there. I didn’t like her vibe. She was too cocky.

“No, we don’t. Is that all?” Her tone was snappy. She pursed her full, glossy lips together and waited for my response. I bit back the insults weighing down my tongue and chuckled. There was no woman alive I couldn’t charm. I was King Peirce. I got all the bitches without trying.

“Damn, I’m hurt. Is this how you treat all your customers?” I pressed my hand to my chest and bent my lips into a frown.

“You’re not a customer here…sir,” she said after looking me from head to toe.

“How the hell can you make the word sir sound like motherfucker?” I quizzed, resting my elbows on the counter. I tried to get a good look behind the counter to see if I spotted the panic button but the fucking teller kept standing in my way.

“You need to back the hell up,” she snapped.

“Is your manager here? You’re rude. All I’m trying to do is decide if this is the bank for me and you’re coming at me wild like I’m here to rob the place or something.” I stood to my full height and her eyes stretched up to mine.

“Like I said, can I help you?” More fucking attitude. If I wasn’t such an upstanding motherfucker, I would have choked it right out of her.

“It would help me a lot if you’d smile instead of frowning at me like that,” I said, flashing my best charismatic smile.

“Smile?” She grimaced. “Did you really tell me to smile? Like I’m at work just to make you comfortable?” When her voice rose, a small old white lady came from the back with concern etched on her wrinkled face.

“Jupiter, are you giving our customer here a hard time?” She pushed thick glasses up on the bridge of her short nose and stared at mouth almighty giving me a hard time. If she wasn’t so busy being a bitch, she would have been sexy as fuck.

I took in her long dark hair and smooth carob skin. It was a damn shame she was so obnoxious. I would have loved to peel her out of those stiff-ass bank teller clothes. We were in Inglewood in the middle of summer and her ass had on a blouse that buttoned up to her neck.

“He’s not a customer, Mrs. Coventry. He’s loitering,” she said with certainty.

“I’m sorry, Mrs. Coventry, is it? I was just asking your teller…” I looked at her nametag and flashed another smile. “Jupiter, how I could open an account with your fine bank. I’m looking for something small just like this.” My charm worked on Mrs. Coventry. She giggled like she was twenty years old again.

“Well, Jupiter here is new and we have to work on that sass but she can help you open an account. Isn’t that right, Jupiter?” Mrs. Coventry’s tone turned stiff when she turned to her employee.

“Yes. Sure.” Jupiter fastened a stiff smile to her face but her eyes still managed to shoot daggers at me. It took talent to be that fucking onery.

“Very good. I’ll be over here if you need anything.” When Mrs. Coventry disappeared, I laughed a little and leaned on the counter again.

“See, baby, what you don’t understand is that the customer is always right.” I winked at her and she rolled her eyes again, fluttering long lashes. They were probably fake.

“Don’t ever call me baby again. You might have Mrs. Coventry fooled but I know you ain’t shit and I’ll air your ass out in a heartbeat. You’re lucky I’m at work,” she grumbled.

“And you’re lucky we’re not on the street or I’d hurt your little girl feelings and make you cry. Now get me whatever paperwork I need to open this goddamn account.” She pissed me off so much, I almost forgot to look at the panic button placements when she turned to the area behind her to gather papers.

Just like I thought. They only had one central panic button.

I didn’t bother wasting any more time with the teller. Hopefully, when me and the Kings came through next week, she wouldn’t be at work. Just to avoid her annoying ass, I’d send Sumo in tomorrow to observe more.

When we were ready to rob them, we’d know this place inside and out.
