“It’s not my fault some motherfuckers robbed my job.” I pressed a hand to my chest and noted that I needed to get my nails done. I liked to keep a respectable length and nothing too crazy but getting them done was a self-care ritual that I never missed.

“Listen…we have an understanding, right? I look the other way while you run your scams and you keep your mouth shut.” He subconsciously glanced at the framed picture on his desk. I smirked a little and ran my pointer finger across the smooth edge of it.

In the photo, he stood proudly on the beach with his wife, their two children, and their dog. Picture fucking perfect. Ugh. I wanted to vomit.

“Not only are you going to look the other way,” I purred, crossing my legs. “You’re going to make sure that if I ever do get caught, the charges vanish.” Made a poof motion with my fingers and smiled.

“I told you, if you get caught, I can’t save you from the state of California. I’ll do my best though.”

“And I’ll do my best to be quiet.” I pressed my index finger to my full lips. “We don’t want Mrs. Marsh and the perfect children to find out what type of person you really are.” I stood to my feet and walked over to the door.

“Why do you say shit like that, Jupiter?”

“Why do you keep hiding things from your family, Charles?” I snapped, my expression hardening as I regarded him. He stood to his feet, nerves forcing him to swallow when he looked at me. I didn’t shy away either. I wanted him to see the way keeping my relationship with him hidden was hurting me.

His eyes softened, the lines framing them relaxing. He rubbed his forehead and walked over to me, pulling me in for a hug. “You know I love you, Jupiter.”

“Uh-huh. Whatever.” I ignored the emotions pulsing through my veins because fuck him. I didn’t need him or anyone else. I pulled away from his hug even though it felt good. I made my muscles stiff and let the indignation in my eyes blaze brightly.

“You sure you didn’t see anything during the robbery?” He asked once more. All he cared about was his fucking job and money. It pissed me off sometimes but other times it worked to my advantage. Him being the captain of police meant I could get away with murder if I wanted to.

“No. Just those stupid fucking lion masks, I told you and the new boy out there.” I tipped my head toward the closed office door.

“I’m fairly certain those masks mean your bank got hit by the LOKs.”

“The…what?” I almost laughed.

“Legion of Kings,” he said, looking at me like I was insane for not knowing who the LOKs were. “They’re extremely dangerous. Especially the leader, King. We can’t nail a goddamn thing to any of them because everyone in Inglewood is scared to death to speak up. They kill without batting an eye and the scary thing is…” His gaze drifted to something beyond me that only he could see. “We don’t know how many of them there are because they’re still new in the gang world. Other established gangs are easy to track because they have deep history in the streets but the LOKs are spreading like a virus…only we don’t know who’s infected.”

“So they…kill people?” I asked, replaying masked man number one’s words. He told me he was dangerous. Something warm and thick clenched deep in my core and my heart rate sped up. I couldn’t tell if I was excited or scared.

Who the fuck doesn’t know shit like that about their own mind?

“You haven’t heard about the murders on the news?” He asked, disapprovingly.

“People get murdered every day, Marsh. I’ve heard of The Legion of Kings but I kind of tuned it out. I thought they just robbed people.” I shrugged my shoulders.

“They more than rob people. They kill whoever even acts like they want to come forward and talk. They kill victims if they put up too much of a fight. So far all I have is a name for the frontman. Nothing else. I don’t know if that’s his real name or a nickname.”

“Well, I guess I better count my lucky fucking stars I didn’t get shot today, huh?” I smirked sarcastically.

“Ju, this is serious. If they’re moving up to banks now, I can only ascertain they have more members,” he huffed.

“It also means they have more money,” I reasoned, examining my nails. I knew Marsh loved money. We had that in common. He wasn’t a stranger to taking bribes. He’d been police captain for more than a decade. To think he’d remain clean all that time was unrealistic.

“Don’t even fucking suggest it, Ju,” he warned.

“What? I’m just saying if they’re hitting banks, they have money. It also means they’ll hit another and another. You could get cut in.”

“Like I said, they’re too new. I don’t know shit about them or the way they work. They seem too wild. I told you they’re trigger happy.”

“Never took you for a bitch, Marsh.” My words earned me a glare that I laughed at. I opened his office door and put on my emotionally distraught face again. “Thank you so much, Captain Marsh.” I sniffled, casting my eyes to the shiny floor. I saw him stiffen and go back to being a stiff pain in the ass and our meeting was concluded.

CHAPTER THREE

I was sitting in front of $610,000 in cash spread out on a pool table in my apartment off Crenshaw. Sumo, Pretty Boy, and Truck all stared at it with me. We really did that shit. We pulled off a bank robbery and twelve hadn’t come for us. Putting the fear of God into Inglewood for years seemed to be working the way I wanted it to.
