“I’ll see you at the apartment, Ju.” He squeezed my hand, then walked between Pretty Boy and Truck, shoving them both playfully. They took off chasing him and I laughed to myself. Three big ass kids.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

It was a fucking party back at the apartment. Women, weed, and drinks were everywhere. The only woman I wanted was being held up by some motherfucking lower-level king who was trying his best to get inside of her tonight. He kept reaching out to grab her hand and saying things to make her laugh but she wasn’t interested.

I could tell by how she kept slicing his words in half with her quick tongue. He was a glutton for punishment because nothing deterred him. Truck was already tracking the guy, which I knew was about to cause a problem. Truck didn’t do anger well. Especially when it came down to someone he loved and I knew he loved the hell out of Juju. Everyone did.

She’d been easily accepted into the Kings. I thought the lower-level kings would give pushback but they didn’t. It made me wonder why the fuck everyone else could be okay with a woman joining the ranks but Sumo couldn’t let it go. I knew all the kings would test Juju and I told her that. They were men. Men who did what the fuck they wanted, had sex with who they wanted, and they weren’t used to consequences.

Juju was fine as fuck and she carried herself like Queen Bee, so of course every motherfucker in a ten-mile radius was going to shoot their shot. They could try all they wanted. I knew what she liked.

Me.

There was no room for anyone else. I knew it. She knew it. Truck and Pretty Boy knew it too. The rest of the kings had no idea but if I had my way, they’d know soon. I’d been drinking Hennessey like it was water and I ate half an edible. I was feeling nice and lose and I needed to blow off steam after seeing Legion of Kings all over the fucking news.

Blowing off steam for me meant shooting someone or fucking someone. Based on the way the motherfucker in the corner was whispering in Juju’s ear, it might end up being both of those things.

“Chill the fuck out, King,” Pretty Boy’s hand landed squarely in the middle of my chest as I headed toward the dining room where the pool table was.

“I’m good,” I lied, my words running together.

“You’re not. I’m too drunk to stopyourdrunk ass. Don’t shoot the lower-level. You know Juju can hold her own.”

“I know but I want to protect her,” I said in a rare moment of filter-less clarity.

“You want to protect her?” Pretty Boy asked, looking to make sure I hadn’t grown another head.

“She’s so fucking bad, nigga. Look at her.” I gestured to the corner where she was and Pretty Boy looked across the room.

“You are drunk as fuck,” he laughed, running his hands down his face. “Come on, man. Let’s take a walk. Truck can stay here and keep an eye on Ju. He’s watching her like a hawk anyway.” I felt comfortable enough with that choice, so I followed Pretty Boy outside and we walked. “Why are you so shitfaced?”

“This drama with Sumo is fucking with me. I know that motherfucker took the money from the storehouse.”

“We all know he did that shit. We’ll handle it and get the money back somehow.”

“Yeah, but he went into hiding after that beat down. He’s not going to resurface until he’s about to start some shit. Ju already mentioned tonight that he’s not done.”

“I agree. We have to keep our heads on a swivel. Sumo is going to come for us hard.” There was unease in his voice.

“Yeah, I don’t want it to come to that either. That’s what has me so fucked up.”

“That and Juju,” Pretty Boy said pausing in his stride to look over at me. We’d walked several blocks from the apartment, posting up on Crenshaw. “What’s up with y'all?”

“Nothing. She’s a king now.”

“You’re not happy with that, are you?” He asked, looking at me.

“With her being a king? I’m fucking ecstatic. She’s pulled in more money than all of us.”

“Nah, not that. I know you’re happy she’s in. I mean, you’re not happy that nothing is going on between y'all anymore.”

I stared at the people walking down the street for a while before answering. He was right, but what the hell could I do about it?

“Yeah…” I shrugged my shoulders. “It’s a lost cause though.” The liquor and the edible still had me feeling their effects, so my mind was in a hazy place.

“Why? The worst has already happened. Y'all fell in love. The world didn’t end.” Pretty Boy looked at me. like I was the last person in the world to catch on.
