“What the fuck are you doing here, Truck? King send you?” Sumo asked. Then he noticed me and his nostrils flared. He must not have remembered how easy it was for me to shoot him.

“Fuck this nigga, Sumo. He runs with the Kings. He’s a bitch.” The guy I assumed was TC said, reaching for his waist.

I stood in front of Truck and said, “The fuck you say about the Kings, nigga?”

“Get this bitch, TC,” Sumo said in true bitch fashion. Of course he had no problem making someone else do his dirty work like he couldn’t handle little old me by himself.

He knew I was a problem.

Out the corner of my eye, I saw an all-blacked-out Charger pull around the complex and I knew King was here.

“Nah, nobody’s touching her,” Truck said shoving me to the side.

“Then you can die in her place.” TC raised his gun and fired three shots at Truck’s chest.

Time stopped.

I rushed toward Truck, firing at TC and Sumo but my hand wasn’t steady. I was too focused on getting to my brother. I had no idea if I hit either of them and I didn’t care.

“Truck!” A scream crawled up my throat as I fell to my knees beside him. Crimson soaked his shirt down to the last thread. “Truck, you’re going to be okay. You’re going to be okay. I promise.” His eyes were wide and filled with shock.

“Truck…fuck!” Sumo roared like his heart was being ripped from his chest. “You weren’t supposed to kill him! Nothim!” I heard Sumo shout.

“I was…I did what…I thought you wanted,” TC’s voice became muffled and muted in the background as I stared at Truck, tears in my eyes, making his face blurry.

“Ju…Ju,” Truck sputtered and coughed. Blood leaked from the corner of his mouth. I heard more shots ring out and I knew it was Pretty Boy and King.

“Shh, don’t talk. Please. Just…keep breathing for me, Truck. I’m gonna call Jay and…”

“I-I’m dying…” Another cough.

“No! No the fuck you’re not!”

“Truck…” King’s broken voice came from beside me. He knelt on Truck’s other side. His face was warped into terrifying agony as he watched his brother slip away. “I should have been here,” King said, tears making his eyes glassy.

“K-King…” Truck coughed again and more blood oozed from his chest. “You were a good…brother. Thank you.” Truck stared straight into the sky his breathing turning shallow. “Ju…ju. I love you.”

“I love you too, Truck. I love you so fucking much.” I rested my forehead against his. I was slicked with his sweat and blood but I didn’t care.

The sound of running feet came rushing toward us, then Pretty Boy was there. On the ground with us. “No,” he said in a small and quiet voice. “Truck. No.”

“Don’t cry, man. That’s that light skin shit,” Truck coughed and it looked like it hurt him so much. I couldn’t watch. Icouldn’t. I scrambled backward and called Jay. She could fix this. She could fix Truck and make him okay. She fixed Sumo and King and she was the fucking best.

“Hey, what’s up?” She answered.

“Jay, please. I need you to help. Truck got shot and it doesn’t look good.” My voice was a wobbly, tearful mess.

“Truck? Oh my god. Juju, I can’t I’m at work. I can’t leave. Call the ambulance.” She sounded panicked and scared.

“I can’t! It’ll be too late! Please, Jay.”

“Juju…” Her voice was so sad. I knew I was asking too much of her but I couldn’t think of anything else to do.

“Fuck!” I heard King explode into the night air. “Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!” The sob that rolled from his chest broke me into dust. A trillion pieces of me dispersed and floated through the air…numb. I knew that scream. I knew that sorrow.

I dropped my phone and crawled to Truck on my hands and knees. I touched his face while I bawled. An ocean of tears pouring from me. “Truck?” I called, small and quiet. “Truck, please don’t leave…I love you so much.” I wrapped my arms around him as best as I could and buried my face in his neck.

There was no pulse.
