“Bakari, stop. This is a strictly business shower.” She looked over her shoulder at me and laughed, playfulness dancing in her eyes.

“I know, I know but…damn, girl.” I moved closer to her in the steam of the shower, erasing the space between us. “Please tell me you’re cool with me eating your ass and fucking it.” I bit my bottom lip and shook my head at the thought.

“That’s something I’d only let my man do, so…” She spun around, a wide smile nearly splitting her face in two.

“Oh? And what the fuck am I then, Sanai?” I backed her up under the waterfall showerhead and leaned down to steal a kiss from her lips.

“I don’t know because you haven’t asked me shit and last night you drunkenly told me you loved me. I don’t do drunk confessions and implied relationships. We’re grown. Ask me properly. Until then, keep your dick out of my ass.”

I laughed loudly and nodded my head. I still loved the fire Sanai brought. She never disappointed. “You’re right. You’re worth me being direct and coming to you like a grown man.”

“I know that.” She shoved me backward and stole the washcloth I’d used on her to wash herself.

“I did mean what I said last night, though. Drunk or not. I love you. You’ve been holding me down through some of the roughest times of my life. There’s no way you don’t feel this pull between us.”

“I do. I just don’t know if Bakari Godwin is ready to give up being Breezy and fucking anything that looks good in a skirt. I’m not trying to hand over my heart to get it stepped on.” Her lips weren’t curved in that beautiful smile anymore. Now, she was looking at me with gravity in her eyes and I didn’t miss the weight of it.

“That’s not what I plan to do, Sanai. You’re special.” I gripped the back of her neck, making her lock eyes with me. She needed to see the gravity in mine, too.

“I hear you…I just hope you’re serious. Now, let’s hurry the fuck up. I want to know what Junior has to tell us.”

I couldn’t get the look in Sanai’s eyes out of my head. It was like she was begging me not to hurt her. Like she wanted to take the same next steps I did but fear was halting her. I couldn’t blame her because I was never a one-woman kind of man. She made me only want her, though. I had no doubt in my mind that if she was my woman, there would be nobody else. What more would I need?

Sanai was everything.

When we showed up to Junior’s house with one minute to spare, Daniel opened the door. A look of disdain was evident on his face when he saw me. He schooled his features quickly and led us inside to Junior.

“Dr. Breeze!” Junior greeted me with a wide smile and open arms. “And little Miss Sinclair. You broke my brother’s heart, you know that?” He nudged her playfully and she flashed a flawless smile that showed none of the deadliness I knew she was capable of. In fact, her smile was almost sheepish. She deserved an Oscar.

“We had one date,” she said in a soft voice that I barely recognized.

“I’m fucking with you. Come on in here. Let’s talk.” Junior’s Haitian accent deepened and some of the amusement left his face.

We followed him through the house and directly to the backyard. I stopped immediately once my feet hit the grass.

Taped to a chair in front of a massive, uncovered swimming pool was a man. Blond hair was plastered to his bleeding forehead. His eyes were nearly covered by the soaked strands. Terror still flickered through the curtain of hair.

“Please, man. I told you everything I know,” he panted, looking at Junior with pleading eyes. I glanced to Sanai and she hadn’t flinched. Her face was stoic and still. She was used to seeing shit like this. It didn’t faze her one fucking bit.

“I know. Now, you’re going to tell them. Speak up so they can hear you. I know it’s hard. You lost a few teeth. Make sure you enunciate, huh?” Junior chuckled and turned to look at Sanai and I.

“I picked up packages for Vanessa Sinclair. Keys of coke. W-when she couldn’t make a drop with her plug, I showed up.” The man sniffed back a rivulet of blood leaking from his nose. “She’s planning to take over Junior’s territory with better product at a cheaper price and she wants to push through the churches in Bellmore. She just can’t get her hands on the one church she wants.”

“The Temple,” I muttered, shaking my head. The man nodded emphatically.

“Did she send hitters to take out the Godwin brothers?” Sanai asked, her voice a deadly calm.

“Yeah. Yeah. She did. I don’t know much about that, though. I’m just a runner. Not a hitter. Please don’t kill me, man.” He turned his pleading stare to Junior.

“Anything else you need to tell us?” Junior asked.

“No, Junior. I swear to God. Oh…I mean…wait, she put a hit out on you. Vanessa did. It wasn’t successful, clearly.”

“A hit out on me?” Junior laughed. “I’m guessing that’s when I almost died. Wow. You’re just full of useful information. It’s almost like I should keep you alive, huh?” A gun seemed to materialize in Junior’s hand. I must have blinked too long because I didn’t even see him pull it.

“Please!” The man’s voice became a panicked screech. His breath came in quick bursts of white against the cold air.

“You know who tried to carry out the hit?” Junior asked. My chest tightened as I stared into the man’s pale blue eyes. His lips were trembling so badly I wasn’t sure he’d be able to speak. Sanai didn’t seem bothered one way or another and I realized she must have been prepared to kill if need be. I was sure it didn’t matter if she had to kill the man in the chair or Junior himself. The ruthless side of her that put business above all else was front and center.
